Acoustic guitar advice

Gday people...

So I've decided I wanna learn how to play guitar. I was hoping some of the guitar players on the forum could help me out. Firstly, are there any particular brands that are good for beginners that aren't too expensive, I don't wanna go out and fork out heaps of coin on my first one just incase I get sick of it or whatever.

Also, would you guys recommend getting lessons? And if so, can anyone recommend a good teacher in the Sutherland area?

Cheers.

i learnt by a combination of teaching myself and by 'lessons' from friends

if you have a few mates who are good guitarists i cant see that method being too bad at all.

the two good australian brand acoustics are Maton and Cole Clarke.. you could get youself one of either (entry level) for under $1000 and you'll notice the difference to a cheaper one

if you are only keen on spending a few hundred just go into any music shop and give them a try. see what feels nicein your hands and has a sound you like. its not all that important if you are only learning. once you get better you can upgrade to something that suits you better and by that time you'll know

and this thread would be better placed in the music forum i think - a mod might want to move it there to get more replies

I go to lessons in Oatley for guitar. I have a Cole Clark which I love, but there are plenty of guitars that you can get for a cheap price. Try Billy Hydes/Allens Music at Taren Point.

Mr Angry knows a lot about guitars you should ask him

there's no point wasting money on soemthing crap, but at the same time there's no point spending a grand on something you don't know whether you'll like or stick to.

even though i think acoustics all have a simialr body shape make sure you're comfortbale with how it feels, no point buying something that looks good but is uncomfortable to play

strings will also make the guitar sound different. and be wary of getting a good guitar player to "demo" a guitar for you as the good ones will be able to make a piece of shit sound good

Juan jnr wanted a guitar for his 13th birthday so we bought him a $90 3/4 Spanish guitar from a music shop.
Like any kid, he wanted a better one but we suggested that if he kept going, then he would get a choice between a better acoustic or an electric one for his birthday 6 months later.
Later that year he had a better one and 5 years on he has a few electric and acoustics, plays a few other instruments and is studying music production.

I wish that someone had encouraged me to learn an instrument when I was a young fellow before I mangled my fingers playing sport and doing manual work.

Hope you stick with the guitar and enjoy music for the rest of your life.

Unless you have the cash and are willing to spend, then I'd go for something cheap ($100-$200), and if you're still going in a years time, then upgrade.

Literally gazillions of free lessons on youtube, and is a good place to start.

I am teaching myself chords and such by picking out songs I like and playing along. A really helpful site is www.chordbook.com. Check it out. It shows you how to play whatever chord you like and if you stumble across a sweet sounding chord you can enter it in there and it tells you what it is.

I'd recommend buying a higher quality guitar second-hand. Also, purchase guitar strings in bulk from Amazon or the like.

Only just given up on my 3/4 classical that I've had for 10 years, string broke and needed new tuning pegs. was around 120 or so I think. Made a good sound for what it was.

Looking at getting an accoustic for my birthday, steel string and about $330, I just want something to muck around with really, play some chords and learn some songs.

I've played guitar for 25 years & some of best sounding guitars I have played have been bought for $50! It just depends, you may fluke it. I bought a Gibson copy called a Givson while travelling through India for 20 quid. It had the classic raised scratch plate & f holes. With a decent set of strings was fantastic to play. Sadly I got sick of travelling with it & sold it for $30US in Sri Lanka. Geez I kick myself now!
