AFL at the WACA

Andrew Demetriou is trying this in every state on the back of the World Cup bid by scaring state govts into upgrading their stadiums. Look at $450M for the Adelaide Oval.

The $450 million budget will be financed through a $100 million contribution being sought from the Commonwealth, $200 million by deferring the proposed tramline to West Lakes for two years, and the $100 million already earmarked for redevelopment of AAMI Stadium.

I also remember him saying that AFL would return to the WACA in Perth if there was an upgrade - could not find link.

I don't think that is going to happen given the size of the playing surface at the WACA was made smaller during the last renovation and there are no plans to increase the playing surface just the capacity of the ground. I'm actually waiting for a mailout regarding the upgrade as the WACA's members including myself have to vote on it

I just pinched this off of the Austadiums website:

The redevelopment reduced capacity to around 20,000 and decreased the dimensions of the playing arena, meaning Australian Football can no longer be played at the ground.

You are right and the new proposal is to reduce the size of the ground further. I was speaking with others today, what Demetriou (lovingly referred to a "FAT ANDY" from here on) said is that if the WACA was to be a World Cup venue it needs to be increased in size to above 40000. He said that the West Coast could then return to the WACA leaving Subiaco to Fremantle. Fat Andy's ego and his self importance to sport is HUGE. :?:?:crazy:

Well that is a development.

The last proposal I saw (on display in the members area) was that the training facilities were moving to some Centre for excellence same area the Force and WA netball side (West Coast fever I think) and the permanent capcity going up.

Reducing the ground size to that low is stupid!! I don't want games being shifted to Subiaco for two reasons. One is that I think drop in pitches are crap. Second and just as important is that I do not want my money going to the West australian Fumbleball Commision in ground use etc

Doesnt really mention the size of the playing surface, does reducing the capacity mean that they are increasing the ground size? Totally agree with you (thats twice and I dont know you) - I am sure you remember Gillys assault at the quickest test century, fantastic cricket in front of a packed ground.

It really must annoy you that you are a member of your local WACA and someone 3300 kms away is letting you know about your ground. Sounds a lot like the AFL.

I doubt the playing surface size will change. I guess I wait to see the plans that we have to vote on, I hope it is closer to the original plan I saw during the season just gone.

East Perth Redevelopment Authority possibly pandering to Trinity college (high end private school) with the link road though, although I'm pretty sure that it was in the original plans.

FIFA world cup will trigger the construction of a Multi-Purpose ground originally announced by the previous labour government and out on the back burner by the Accidental Premier

Gilly's was the second fastest century because that dirty pom Hoggard bowled wide of the stumps. Gilly has the second fastest century

no way AFL will ever go back to the WACA, the WAFL own Subiaco and draw most of their income from its use by the TWO AFL teams. As they also ultimately hold the licenses for the two AFL teams there is no way in the world they would ever let it happen.

Back on topic I'm amazed teh NSW Govt would offer another ground on top of SCG and ANZ, especially after supporting the GWS training ground improvements. If I was a Sydney NRL club like Manly or St george I would be kicking up big style!

Dont really follow Union, where do Western Force play in WA, what size is the ground inc capacity, if this ground an option for World Cup.

PS Is Mattie Geyer the best Western Reds player ever? YES.
PSS Hoggard is an ass**** YES

We keep agreeing

They were at Subi but moved to MES this year. We have been promisd a $145mill upgrade of MES for Glory, Force and Reds(hopefully) use but with this no action Govt who knows. If we do get the WC I can see MES getting some $'s to improve the facilities and be used as a training ground. Capacity is around 21K at the moment.

The only time I heard them talking about playing some AFL at the WACA again was if Australia get the WC, Subiaco will be used by them so they need somewhere to play games in Perth and the WACA would be it for about 10 weeks.
