Dragons add Melbourne Storm forward to roster

EXCLUSIVE BY MICHAEL CARAYANNIS
18 Aug, 2011 04:00 AM

INCOMING Dragons coach Steve Price’s recruitment drive for big and aggressive forwards continues with St George junior Atelea Vea joining the Dragons next season.

Vea, 24, a back-rower, spent his youth playing for Hurstville United before switching to Cronulla Sharks where he made his NRL debut in 2009.

Vea played eight games at the Sharks before switching to Melbourne Storm last year where he missed a large chunk of the season with a shoulder injury.
He has played eight games for the Storm this season.

The Dragons’ forward pack were criticised this season for lacking punch. With Vea (102kg) joining North Queensland giant Leeson Ah Mau (108kg), Gold Coast prop Will Matthews (104kg) and the Warriors’ big man Jeremy Latimore (109kg), Price has looked to add some size and muscle.

The Dragons lose Jon Green (Sharks) and Adam Cuthberston, who is likely to follow Wayne Bennett and Darius Boyd to Newcastle. Vea is the second St George junior back at the club next year with Chase Stanley reuniting with younger brother Kyle in the Dragons’ top squad. Wests Tigers’ utility back Tim Moltzen is the other and the Dragons may target one more outside back.

2012 gains 2012 gains: Chase Stanley and Atelea Vea (Storm), Will Matthews (Titans), Jeremy Latimore (Warriors), Tim Moltzen (Wests Tigers) and Leeson Ah Mau (Cowboys).
Losses: Darius Boyd (Knights), Jack Bosden (Roosters), Jon Green (Sharks), Mark Gasnier (retirement), Peni Tagive (Roosters), Alex McKinnon (Knights).

IMO he could tackle he just had some shocking reads in defence! Personally I would play him in the forwards and have Kyle Stanley at centre.

Depressing isn’t it

Not at all. The forwards look vastly improved. Bigger and more aggressive. Lots of competition for spots. In the backline we lose 2 stars - one of whom is disinterested and the other at the end of his career. I think the recruitment for next year has been outstanding.

I hope you're right.

Remember we also have some talented young players such as King, DeBelin, Rein & Kyle Stanley who will be part of the top 25 next year ( and hopefully many more after that ). I know they've all had different experiences over the last 2 years, but they are all long term projects.

Its hard to know what to make of next year i guess. It could go either way at this stage. I sort of always thought that Boyd would come back to earth a little. He was in a rich vein of form last year that was never going to last forever. He is a very good first grade footballer but I never felt he would be an out and out champion like say a Lockyer for example. No doubt he is a loss all the same. As for Gaz, well he is a champion but I think Chase Stanley will develop quite nicely if he can stay injury free. I feel that he played his best games in Dragons colours in the limited opportunities Bennett gave him in his last year at the club. I remember him having an outstanding game against the Warriors in Auckland not long before he left.

I woudnt say outstanding...

IMO we are pretty think in the reserves. I would have liked signing a superstar to cover Boyd. Dugan would have been outstanding.

Recruitcment is average. And remember, we will lose more players... Cuthbo, dean young can't be far off... Hmmm

Cutbo has been really average in the last couple of months, we shouldn't be too concerned about losing him. I think Moltzen is sufficient cover for a player like Boyd, obviously not in the same class but potentially just as good. Considering the player market there really is much top quality talent out there at the moment. I think the recruitment has been really good considering the available options. At the moment Dugan isn't worth the money that would be offered to him. His injury history is a real concern.

Would be a crying shame if we lost Marketo because of someone like Cuthbertson. Tis a pity Jake didn't get more bench spots throughout this year. He would improve in leaps and bounds playing alongside Deano, Beau, Benny etc regularly.
