Anyone here into reggae? I've been listening to a fair bit lately, mostly inspired by Natty Sistren Sound who were supporting N'fa and Blue King Brown last week at the Tivoli. Also I developed a huge crush on the smoking hot selecta. Anywho who do you like? what types? Do you stick to the classic roots or prefer the newer dancehall, rub-a-dub, reggaeton type heavier stuff?

I-and-I would have been forgiven for tinking you're all taking the piss.

Love my reggae from the traditional old schoolers like the Bobs and Peter Tosh's (mainstream, I know, but Tosh is my all-time fave) but have been really getting into a lot of newer dub stuff and others with a strong reggae influence like Michael Franti and Spearhead who, imo, have the best mix of funk, soul, rock and reggae EVER.

yeah franti rocks. check out matisyahu if you haven't already. Also two brilliant cds by the easystar allstars Dub Side of the moon (a reggae reworking of pink floyds dark side of the moon) and radiodread (a reggae version of Radioheads, OK Computer).

As for the more rootsy stuff i'm liking Luciano and some of the older stuff like Desmond Dekker, Toots and the maytals, jimmy cliff. But yeah you can never go wrong with some Bob Marley or Peter Tosh.

I love reggae but my selection for listening is pretty limited just becase there is sooooooo much history and so many different genres that it encompasses....its very specific. I love all music so I appreciate reggae but tha aficianados who listen to reggae and nothing else can tell you that theres so much more to it.

The Wailers, Black Uhuru, bruning Spear, Sly & Robbie, King Tubby, Lee Scratch Perry, Mad PRofessor, Augusts Pablo to name a few.....

i am not heavily into Reggae......but have heard a bit of 1950`s Ska over the years....to my old ears it sounds like 1950`s jamaican rhythm and blues (probarbly why it appeals to me)

can you guys give me some names from the 50`s ska scene to check out

thanks

yeah i'm not too familiar with the whole ska offshoot. I guess artists such as desmond dekker, the skatalites, toots and the maytals and the melodians had some stuff which ventured into ska. Other than that you've got the specials who made it fairly main stream in the uk around the time.

Apart from that, i'm probably more familiar with the late 80's early 90's punk ska bands. Think mighty mighty bosstones, catch 22, hepcat, the porkers, reel big fish, and voodoo glow skulls.

I bet Dave Lister aka Craig Charles, from Red Dwarf could :) ... In Red Dwarf they called it Rastabilly Skank, but no doubt it was ska.

Me ? No. My extent of reggae extends to Peter Tosh and Marley. Both were exceptional though, however i just ADORE the Revolution song by Marley. That's just wonderful stuff. But nothing can compare to the Redemption Song.
