American Rugby Football League

Should be interesting. Clearly they think Sevens is the way to appeal to the US sports fans limited knowledge of RU. I've often thought RL would appeal to Yanks for similar reasons - get rid of the confusing scrums and rucks, the 6tackle rule similar to NFL downs.

I can't tell if they are talking about normal RU sevens or some modified version. Is sevens played on a smaller field as depicted in that link? I always assumed it was played on a full size pitch.

7s is played on a full sized pitch.

This is a bastardized version of a bastardized version of Union.

Americans for you, if they cant play the game then why not change the rules so that they can.

geez, how small is the ground

they are really discouraging the kicking game, most normal kicks would be out on the full on that ground

will have to look into this some more befor I say "good" or "bad" for the game.

On the surface, it sounds like it is great though.

Few questions I have....
1. Who will be playing/coaching?
2. What networks will it be on?
3. What time of year?

This has the potential to break the sport of Rugby into the popular culture of this country. Though in a different form. If it took off like they hope, it would provide a great way for the USA eagles to recruit top caliber players from football, or rear up top flight players from younger ages and KEEP them in the sport.

On a side note, I grew up playing 8 man football (gridiron), which uses an 80yrd long field that is 40 yrd wide, so I can appreciate the smaller field. Will be interesting to see what the smaller pitch will do to the style of play typically seen in RU7s.

Would be a great coup if the organizers could get Lomu to play on one of the teams.

At the moment in the US Union runs in the winter and league (AMNRL) runs in the summer. Most players play both codes, and I can see this "American Rugby Football League" being the more attractive option if the comps run at the same time.

Well, if you live in the South, that might be the case! But for the other 2/3 of the country, Union is a "fall"/"spring" sport. Typically you play 8-10 weeks in the fall, then take a break while the ground is frozen, and the pitch is covered in snow. Most teams are done by the first week of November. You usually start practicing again by the first of March, and play another 8-10 weeks. By the end of May, the temps are nearing the upper 90s, and the pitch is hard as concrete. The weeds that pass for grass have dried up, and the pitch is unplayable.

Not exactly the ideal playing conditions for rugby. I really envy those of you that have a long enough window of weather to get a good playing season in! You have no idea how lucky you are.

little chips and grubbers might work.... and you could put up an attacking bomb from your own goal line!!!
