NSW legend Andrew Johns has been roundly criticised on social media for a monosyllabic performance on Channel Nine's State of Origin coverage.

• Andrew Johns said he was not looking forward to "all the bullshit" from Queenslanders for the next year
• He said he was struggling to speak because the game "just means so much to me"
• Johns was labelled "unprofessional" and a "sore loser" on social media

Forty minutes after the Blues' shock 22-12 loss to Queensland in the decider at Lang Park, Johns joined the panel to wrap up the thrilling game.

Host James Bracey welcomed him to the conversation, and Johns started as he intended to go on.

"Yeah. Great effort. Great game," he said.

When asked about the biff returning to State of Origin — which he was clearly eager to see while commentating, calling on the referees to let the players fight — he still struggled for words.

I had no problem with that rant as he was offering his professional football opinion. He was criticising strategy and lack of eyes up game awareness.

They were expected to win, qld lose two players before the match and during the match, and they still lose.

There's a notable difference in the professionalism of the Fox Sports commentary and Ch.9 for these games.

The FB comments this morning are cringeworthy and funny in equal measure as expected. People who (evidently) suffer from severe short-term memory loss, can't spell beyond a 6th grade level and think that it's only one team/ set of fans who ever complain about the referees or act salty after a loss...

Is Smith main commentary? If so he's balanced out with Joey. They've both bled for their respective colours I got no issues with them (or Fatty or Gus or Gal or Locky) showing their colours. The Blue v Maroon divide is the foundation of SOO, if the commentators were neutral they wouldn't get it.

Im amazed that particular bit is labelled "unprofessional" since that was probably the smartest thing he's said all night. The whole coverage is unprofessional. Nothing without Sterlo and Rabs

I remember Fatty cheering on QLD in the mid to late 90s, when he wasnt coach, annoying at first but quite funny.
