Annoying Trends In Modern Videogaming

Micro transactions.

I think this is the cause of many issues. I tried playing RDR2 online and got bored very quickly with the required grind of travel and collecting resources just to earn decimal points of gold bars. Couldn't even get good clothes and stuff without gold bars, clearly they're just trying to push people into spending real money which is shit.

It's the whole reason Diablo 3 started off with a thud, they eventually fixed all that but it was a little too late

Another thing that really, really bugs me - in NBA 2k20, in order to unlock certain items of clothing, you need to level your character up, by playing online.

I don’t want to play online - stop trying to force me to play online.

My created career character looks basic because of that, but I'll be damned of I am forced to play online.

Yeah it pisses me off too man, when I upgraded to a new gen console I just couldn't understand why I couldn't play my single player game without an online connection. I kept thinking "but I have the CD, what more do you need??" haha

Another thing is when they remove part of the game (e.g. stages, characters, etc.) and have it as downloadable content later to try and make a little more money off people, FFS I paid full price just release the whole game you greedy pricks.

Also, un-skippable cut scenes, I should have a choice damn it!

It's so irritating.

I'm not an online player, so stop trying to force me to play online!

I hate both those things!

How about when they "remaster" a game, and remove content, only to add it later as a DLC? It's infuriating!

Unimaginative online play.

If all games must be online, can’t someone come up with more options than just “everyone kill each other”?

Fully co-op online play would be great. Like if I could play RDR or GTA, and have only my friends on the map, that would be outstanding. But no, there is always going to be some f**kboy sniping you every few minutes.

full length story modes with co-op online players e.g. GTA5 where you each pick one of the main characters would be fantastic

I also find the Ultimate Team shit that EA Sports are doing with their Madden, and FIFA, titles absolutely banal - I just want to play career mode, as a coach, or a created player, but they sink all their focus, and funding, into Ultimate Team.

That is why I stuck with games like Ghost Recon Wildlands and Anthem. Co-op mode where you are following a story, just not much of a story with these games, and doing missions with friends against AI. Wildlands had it so anyone who played in a group had missions completed as being done on everyone’s games, Anthem you had to be the owner to have it completed on yours.

The almost total loss of local multiplayer (i.e. same room, multiple controllers on one system). Nintendo is about the only company that bothers with it anymore.

Yeah this is true there aren't many good co-op games any more

I do enjoy Overcooked and Rocket League with the kids

Yep this is so true

I don't play much online but my mate and I tried out GTA and RDR online and were so disappointed despite everyone raving about it. It was either grind for resources/money or just do challenges/races with randoms which ain't much fun.

Totally agree that having some co-op online story modes would be so good, surely someone has thought of this idea?

Not an avid gamer... so agree being "forced" online is a frustration.

Can't see that changing though.

Picked up "ghost recon breakpoint" sometime back without realising it was online only.

The overall experience wasn't terrible, but having a game you can't play some days because the "servers are down" is maddening.

May be alone here, but I'm also frankly over the "Big Boss" concept (although it is by no means new).

Perhaps there is still a place for it in certain game genre's...

But I don't get why in a FPS (for example), where you've spent half your time upgrading weapons and honing your skills to be able to perfect a "one shot kill", that you suddenly need to rely on mashing buttons and play like a 4 year old would to complete a "stage".

Maybe it's my lack of ability (it could well be! lol) but any "stage" that needs to be replayed ad nauseam to be overcome adversely impacts on a games quality IMO.

I agree totally.

I also hate modern gaming's obsession with quick time events - if you want my player to punch a bad guy in the face, then let me control him to do it; don't ask me to mash square, then circle, then R2.

pardon my ignorance but i'm almost certain you can have a private lobby in GTA V, that only you and those you want or invite can join.

It irks me that 2k will force me to play online, against real human opponents, to level up my player, so that I can buy a specific shooter band, or headband, or whatever.

Read my lips, 2k:

I. DON'T. GIVE. A. DAMN. ABOUT. ONLINE. GAMING.

While they continue raking in the $$$ don't expect any change. I don't get it myself.

I'm all for paid expansion packs that add new regions and content into a game.

And another one - automatic celebrations, which you can't stop.

I was playing MyCareer on NBA 2k20, and my created centre got a block on the opponent centre; he then proceeded to do a stupid muscle pose to the crowd, while the ball was still in play, and my opponent gathered the ball, and dunked it over me.

NBA 2k's MyCareer operates on a letter grading system (A+, A, A-, and so on), and I lost a full letter grade, for letting my opponent score on me, even though I could not control my player.

It's the dumbest thing of all time.
