Campo nephew slams rugby
By Jason Avedissian
January 19, 2004
TERRY Campese, the nephew of Wallaby great David Campese, says rugby is boring.
He has made the claim as he prepares for league's festival of tries - the World Sevens, which kicks off on Saturday at Aussie Stadium.
The 19-year-old Canberra Raiders five-eighth joined the Raiders at the end of 2002 after a lack of opportunities with the ACT Brumbies. He represented the Australian Schoolboys rugby team but now wants nothing to do with the game his uncle dominated for 14 years.
Campese watched two games at last year's World Cup - neither of which excited him.
"It was pretty boring," he said. "Rugby league is much better."
Campese said he watched the New Zealand-Wales pool match and the World Cup final, won by England in the final seconds of extra-time when Jonny Wilkinson kicked a drop goal.
The teenager insists he has not inherited the silky skills that made Campese one of rugby's entertainers.
"I don't think I'll be a very good Sevens player," Campese said.
"I'm not quick enough."
SOUNDS LIKE HE WOULD HAVE PLAYED RUGBY IF HE COULD HAVE!
