Meanwhile, Souths continue to pick the eyes out of other clubs best talent and still manage to miss the 8.

I don't doubt that, but how many outside of the club were asking themselves 'how are they affording to do that'.

Whilst I'm a Saints fan, and biased.. if you're having the same doubts over Saints as you did over Melbourne, well.. I would question your understanding of the value of a RL player, and your understanding of the salary cap.
