Appeal decision this afternoon

The Dragons board will decide this afternoon if they are going to appeal the judiciaries decision. I cant for the life of me understand what there is to think about, if we do not appeal the decision he is more than likely never going to play in australia again, if we do he may receive a reduced sentence, what do we have to lose in this situation?

I agree, the dragons have nothing to lose so I don't see what the problem is. Just on Friday nights game. The pass from Barrett to Hooper(?) where he held it up slightly and Hooper ran throught the gap to score was a fantastic try. Saints execution in that match was perfect. A great display.

One of the tries on friday ight did have a forward pass in it so it should have been 32. They are starting to hit "that" semi final form the usually hit when they are in the semis for sure. I am getting rather excited at the prospect of us in form in september, I am biased, but when the dragons are in the semis and they are playing very well, everyone willget their monies worth that is one sure thing. Looking forward to the semi's it seems to be a fairly open reace this year. Any of the teams in the top 8 can knock each other off on their day, that is what semi final football is about.

If the top eight stays as it is there will be five Sydney clubs in the semis and that will guarantee large crowds and I would also like to see the Warriors play in their maiden semi.

Back to last Friday. Barrett did not panic and the guys played as a team and Ryles has taken up the task of leading the way for his forward pack in Smiths abscence.

If I was a Newcastle fan i'd be very worried. With or without Johns, they have very brittle defence and will struggle against any of the other sides unless they get their act together.

I think you could throw the roosters (attack) into that equation as well and the bulldogs to a lesser extent they were both very ordinary this week. The 4 teams who are in form are the eels, saints, sharks and the warriors. We all know how quickly fortunes can change in football, approximately 7 days last time I counted.

I have cut and paste this article from Rapidfire's WORL topic. thanks mate

<table align=center border=0 cellpadding=0 cellspacing=5> <tbody> <tr> <td width=550>DRAGONS SEEK LEAVE TO APPEAL SMITH SUSPENSION</td></tr> <tr> <td width=550>20 August 2001
The St George Illawarra Dragons have today advised the National Rugby League that they will seek leave to appeal the six match suspension handed down to captain Craig Smith at a judiciary hearing last Wednesday.
If successful, the appeal will be heard by the NRL’s Appeals Committee, which will be made up of the President of the Appeals Committee, a nominee of the Director of Referees and a nominee of the Chairman of the Players Association.
The Dragons have made their decision within the allowed seven day timeframe from the date the decision was handed down and Chief Executive Officer Peter Doust said "As we have said all along we want to support our captain and we will utilise the avenues within the NRL rules. We don’t want to make any more comments at this stage given the nature of the circumstances." </td></tr></tbody></table>

I think the Dragons were just waiting to see if there was any point in mounting an appeal. It's all well and good to say the Dragons must fight this but if they have nothing new to offer then why put Smith and themselves through any more hassle.
The fact that they are having a go means that they think they can win.
I've said before that Smith has Buckley's chance of winning an appeal but I've since changed my mind.
A lot has happened over the last week and there is growing support for Smith. The media hysteria over Walters' injury has subsided and even Bennett has come to terms with the'news' that he should concentrate on his own problems.
The fact is, Jim Hall was wrong. He made an error ofbias by declaring that Smith's tackle had: "...forceful, deliberate or highly reckless contact....There was no need for Smith to lead with his elbow as he fell to the ground on the defenceless Bronco halfback."
Not only was Jim Hall showing a lack of partiality but he was also wrong by trying to assume intent.
Unfortunately, the will of the other three panelists, Darrell Williams, Royce Ayliffe, Ian Roberts was weak to say the least.
It's a rare thing, but Smith might just win this appeal.

BTW, Johnsy:
The pass in Friday's match wasn't forward. It came off the arm of a Newcastle player. Dare I say... Harrigan got it right....!
