A question for all out there. I am thinking of starting a website on sports in general and will have a major focus on league, Premier league and NFL. I need to know a few things.

1. How much does it cost to host a decent website?
2. What programs do I need to develop the site?
3. Is anyone interested in helping?

1. it can vary in price. usually the bigger it is, the more you pay.
2, i think the people who design sites have all the gear.
3, i would be keen ,tho the site builders usually take charge and do what you ask them to do.
worth a look tho...

Legend you can get free web hosting from places like FortuneCity and Tripod I have mine hosted at www.fortunecity.co.ukthe only drawback is that you have to put up with either banner adverts or pop-ups but for 50 meg of free webspace I think this is a minor irritation. If you don`t know anything about HTML editing then i suggest using a program called <u>Namo Web Editor</u>, it`s a fairly easy program to use and you can get an evaluation copy from www.zdnet.com/downloads another program you will need is one to upload all your files, I suggest one called <u>3DFTP</u> also available from the same site. Hope this information is of use to you.

try this one, it is very professional and you can do loads of stuff, you can even do it for free, they aren't website communities like NINEMSN, it's a proper website very professional, I've got one my self, you can do polls, text, allsorts, if you want a pro website without having to pay which is sometimes better than a pay one just visit:

www.theglobe.com

I think they do, do pay ones as well though, by the way, read carefully, pro websites can be hard to understand! It don't take long to get it started though!

oh yeah, you need to join first!

visit mine and see what it's like at:

http://members.theglobe.com/rjrugbylover/forums/

after you have your website, if the address is too long then you can easily get another address which is shorter by visiting: www.cjb.net
I did it to my rjworldsportsnews and I now have two different addresses I can use:
http://communities.ninemsn.com.au/rjworldsportsnews or
www.rjworldsportsnews.cjb.net

All you do is get it re - directed.
If you descide to do that then choose to have it cjb.net so it doesn't cost you anything but if you choose .com, co.uk, com.au etc then it costs you money so be aware.

Reply and tell me what you think after you have looked at mine to see if your interseted!

Thanks for the info guys, i'll check it all out. I have already registered a domain name and I have organised to get a copy of Microsoft front page and Dreamweaver. i don't know if these are hard to use but we will soon see. It's good to have some technical support when I need it. Cheers.

r9902404, is rugby web your own handy work? I like the layout and design, I only had a brief look but it seems quite impressive.

just personally, and i dont know a great deal about web design, i think 90210 is right. start off with something you are comfortable with and go from there.i know for a fact that 90210 has put in hundreds of hours on a "free "site, but the same "free" site has made the oz top 100 sports sites.
anythings possible.

Guys, first of all my apologies for my relative scarcity today. My son is sick and i've had problems with my isp. I'll be back on deck in full swing tomorrow.

I am a firm beleiver in having to crawl before you can walk. I only want to doa bit at a time and gradually build up the site and link it to this discussion forum. Mine will be about most professional sports with a flavour for RL and NFL, the two sports I know best but I am slowly catching up with my Premier League knowledge. I am very excited and looking forward to the challenge with a lot of enthusiasm.

R990204, that is an impressive site. It has an ESPN feel to it. You must be a man of many talents. Can I ask what program you used to build your site and how long it actually took?

R990204, I was wondering if i could put your site as a link on the front page on this site and vice versa. At the moment I have nrl.com.au but I want something with a bit more appeal and not as generic as the nrl site.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone.

Legend:
I used Dreamweaver for the html and Flash and Fireworks for the design. It took me about 10-20 hours for the design. The content for the site just comes with time. Tony saw my first effort in 1999 and it had nothing. Looking up info and pictures does take some time. If you want some help designing your site, i'll be happy to help. The most time consuming part is keeping the site up to date.

It would be great if you could put a link to my site on yours and i'll have to talk to you about where abouts on the site you want yours. Thats another thing, Promotion!!!

I have failed to promote my site properly becasue of time and i dont like spamming. It would be intresting to hear how you plan to promote your site.

I already have this site as a link on rleague.com. Maybe you should do the same. They actually encourage you to do so. That would be an idea. As this site grows and you want to promote your site I have no problem with that. I am also assessing the cost of getting a front page on yahoo. I have a secure server with my site and as I build it I may try and find an on-line sports clothing partner. That is a little down the track but so long as I have an up to date site and good technology then the skys the limit. I've already had an offer from a friend who wants to send info from the U.K so things are moving nicely. I get a copy of dreamweaver and frontpage next week and have already downloaded an FTP program.

R990204, I like to think of myself as an innovative type of bloke and without bragging too much I started the post "who is the worst player of all time" which has been copied ad nauseum. Controversy is also part of the game. I also started the "Brett Finch is a ****ing idiot" post which was popular as was "this site is run by communists". I beleive you have to challenge the staus quo and I saw on the WORL site some people asking where I have been. Yo and I know where. lol

i was just looking at that thread too.
do you feel the time could be right to say where we have been, or leave it till your sites up?
i know it was very tempting....

I found out that the most effective way of promoting your website is to do a post on it on other sites message board which brought me about 16 new members and about 10 of them from World Of Rugby League. But I realised that it can cause bother so I go onto big sports websites which I know I won't go on again such as ESPN, aleague etc and promote it there and then scarper. I have attracted a coupke of members that way like I said and I have also gone around and got my link put ojn loads of different sports websites and I have only just got a new counter for a bout 2 weeks and already I have had nearly 400 hits on rjworldsportsnews and 24 members but some of em come on all the time and post for about a week then the next week they lose interest, I try to do posts which interest people but I don't know what interests them!

I have just got a copy of dreamweaver but I need to get Flash and Fireworks to build the site. I am also trying to find appropriate java scripts to help me build the website but this will take time. Does anyone have a copy of Flash and Fireworks I could borrow or copy?

You don't need flash or fireworks. You can use any graphics tool to make images, even paint.

Legend, have you got icq or msn?
