Aussie cricket

Just sitting here thinking about where the Aussie side is at having just lost the Ashes.

Obviously it's a huge disappointment and I agree with Warne that England were not the better side than Australia in the series, unlike 2005.

I actually see a heap of potential in this Aussie team.

Forget the domination of the Warne-McGrath era but with the systems we have in plave we should expect to be in the top 3 countries in the world at all times.

There are some issues - the selectors are clearly idiots and we're lacking in a few areas but I see some good signs in the players.

Johnson needs to keep developing and find consistency but at his best is devastating.

Between Clark and Lee we have a quality bowler depending on the conditions (when you play at Lords, Clark plays. Idiots).

Siddle to me is an excellent reserve bowler. I still see him as a real worker rather than a brilliant bowler but in certain situations, all good.

Hilfy. Was good in England but not sure how he will go in other conditions. The jury is out but potential is there.

Spinning options - do your best. Hauritz has become an excellent limited overs bowler. I personally don't see why so many diss him. He is no Warne and should never ne an automatic inclusion but on the right wickets he can be very good in Tests.

As for the batting line-up, tweaking is needed but we will never ne short on quality batsmen.

Summary - the Ashes loss was devastating but I think it disguised the potential this side has. The potential came to the surface in Sth Africa but missed chances in England.

Good days, not great days, ahead.

Our expectations are used to being high but my criticisms of the side are more off-field than on-field right now.

Discuss.

There is potential, our main problem was losing Warne and McGrath at the same time. Replacing bowlers is always harder since they take time to reach their potential. Siddle looks to be in the selectors mind as a long term option and hes the leading wicket taker for the calendar year so hes done very well. Once he solves his odd wayward deliveries he will be a very good bowler for us. The one thing we are missing is another out and out quick after Lee. I guess Johnson fills it but hes so inconsistent.

Batting we are looking really good with a number of youngsters pushing for higher honours.

Will always be up there, the development programs and quality domestic comps will ensure that.

The talent is there, look at well Paine has come in and handled himself. Our main problems are the Captain, coach and selectors. Ponting is our only option ATM but the other 2 should be easily fixed.

If only we could merge Tubby's tactical nous, Steve Waugh's ruthlessness and Ponting's ability at the crease into one super-human.

Get the speed of thompson, the accuracy of mc grath, the movement of massey also have the ability to bowl a mesh of Warne-0-Reilly-Grimmet leg spin. We wont get too greedy and worry about offspin. Have the striking ability of Gilchrist, with the talent of Bradman and Ponting (for modern day purposes). The mental toughness of S Waugh with Taylor's tactical nous and Border's grit for captaincy. Thats a super australian cricketer.
