who do you reckon are the better team?
i have always ranked the mid to late 80,s west indian team the greatest to ever hold a bat.
clive loyd, viv richards, micheal holding come to mind.
then again we have an aussie team who won ,i dont know how many games on the trot, sweeping all aside.

with both eyes open, who,s the best ??

I can't split the two sides.
The West Indies had better fast bowlers, but the current Aussies have Shane Warne, who gives them a dimension the Windies didn't have. Both are or were great batting sides and great fielding sides.
The Aussie side of the mid seventies featureing the Chappell brothers and that great lady of cricket, Lillian Thompson, was also a great side.

I would say the aussies, only because they have a more balanced side with more dimensions than relying of 4 quicks to bowl a side out. Australia seem to have more players that can merge in and out of bowling, batting and fielding. Australia bat to No 9, that is not saying all 9 will score runs, but they can be considered better than average batsmen. Gilly is a huge bonus, how good is a side that can have him coming in when you are 5 or 6 down, that point alone shows the kind of depth this side has.

true, aussie have great depth, always have had.
do you think they have the raw power and aggression of the windies of old.
roopy, lillee and thomo are legends but the 2 brothers you mentioned are dirty words over this side of the ditch :)
5 yrs ago, south africa were a champion team.do you reckon they could knock over this oz team?
when is the next S.A v oz serries?

The 1998 Zimbabwe team was without doubt the greatest cricket team to take to the pitch.

I agree with Warlock.
The Windies team of the midto late 80's was purely awasome. They had very little to practically no weaknesses. Couple that with one of the coolest and most inspirational leaders in Clive Lloyd, they were simply the best that I've seen.
Some of my favourites were Gus Logie, Clive Lloyd,Malcom Marshall, Viv Richards, and Joel Garner.

The Aussies today do not compare to the Windies, who inicidentally batted right down to number 10. I once saw Michael Holding smash 50 in about 30 balls, to rescue a one day game. Dont forget also, that cricket had to change the rules to stop the Windies domination (reduce no of bouncers allowed per over).
Of the current Australians, Steve Waugh mightforce his way in the Windies side ahead of Gomes. Shane Warne or Glen MgGrath might force their way into the windies side ahead of Courtney Walsh or Andy Roberts also. Haynes, Greenige, Lloyd, Dujon, Walsh, Ambrose, Garner, Roberts, Richards,Richardson would all be walk up starters in the current Australian Side.

After examining the posts here, i have to say the Windies are clearly ahead. The Aussie side is very good but the Windies were the best in all aspects. Even the weak link, Walsh is the greatest wicket taker of all time.

It's a great question and one which which we can never really answer. For a long time, It was an exciting thing when the Windies came to Australia. Some of the names in the team of the 70s and 80s are simply legendary.
What can you say about a team which was a huge draw card in in Australia even though all the locals expected Australia to lose?
The Windies were hugely popular for more than a generation and I think it's pretty unfortunate to see them slip so much over the last 10 years.

Australia on the other hand has been dominant ever since and this is a team which has grown in strength and produced it's own generartion of legends.

Anyway, I think both teams are magnificent. I'd love to see them play each other.

If I was really pushed to select a winner over a Test series, I'd go forWest Indies by the narrowest of margins but really, it's just too hard to call.

first of all i will select a team out of the two teams before picking a winner

greenidge
haynes
richards
richardson
m.waugh
s.waugh
gilchrist
holding
marshall
warne
m'grath

12 man, border
13 man, gomes

i could'nt find a spot for the big cat,i will make him team manager.

i assume the series is over 5 tests

1st test-windies win in humid conditions in brisbane, seamers paradise

2 nd test sydney-warne bamboozles with an assisted turning wicket

3rd test adelaide-australia win on flat batting wicket

4th test perth-australia wilt under pace attack inside three days.

5th test melbourne-boxing day test fans go home without a ball bowled, test is called off due to unseasonal rain again.

series 2-2

cheers pepe

You Have to remember people that the 80s windies team were playing more competetive teams than the current crop of teams over the world. I do beleive though glen M would be able to compete fora bowlers position As for wicketkeeping Dujon has no worrieshe could bat as well as keep, gilly itseems at the moment can only bat

if you look at longevity of success, then the windies win hands down. how many years did they go without ever losing a test series? i am not exactly sure but wasn't it ~15 years??. the current australian team have only dominated for a few years, and lost the recent series to india (only just and what a series that was!), although i would guess their domination is more so than the windies best few years (ie. oz winning 18 of their last 20 tests).
if you look at individual players records and extrapolate their current stats then most of the australia players would surpass the windies players records. gilly is far and awaybetterthan dujon , what heconcedes with the gloves he more than makes up for with the bat. lee and gillespie would have better stats than holding, garner, croft, roberts and walsh at the same stages of their careers. slater would be the equal of their openers (and tubby but he couldn't grab a game by the neck and...) and forget about warnie and the waughs. what windies players stand out in that era - richards and marshall.
