Australian Gridiron...

This forum was empty so I dont know if that means no-one is interested in NFL or just had nothing to say. Figured I'd get something in anyway. Mini-camps/training camps are still in action in the States so news is pretty non-existant. BUT, Australia recently played 2 games in QLD. The first against the OHIO All Stars, who they convincingly beat 20-7. The 2nd was against the New Zealand Haka. The Aussies completely outclassed the Kiwis & finished the game off 24-0, thus gaining first spot on the inaugral Trans-Tasman trophy. This will probably be the same team to go to the Gridiron World Cup next year.

**SHAMELESS PLUG**

Teams are always after more players so if your interested leave a note & (if in Sydney) I'll help you get in contact with the closest club. Training for most teams has started & season begins 7th September...( I think!)

So what's your position mate? I know how to play and was offered a spot with the Liverpool Pirates many years ago but was still fanatical about playing league. I have a bung knee now so i'm pretty much stuffed but i'd love to have a crack at tight end.lol.

I'm a lineman, just the meat in the middle... :)

As for which team, well I'll let you guess but 1 clue I will give is that they've been mentioned on this page already. (Though the name is slightly different now.)

Liverpool Pirates? I once met the whole team at a Super Bowl function at Star city when my beloved Broncos knocked off the Falcons. I also met Darren Bennett who is a really nice bloke. I also have an autographed John Elway jersey as my prized possession.

Australia are the World Champions at Junior level after ragging USA and Mexico and Great Britain are one of the best teams in the world along with Germany and Canada, especially at Flag Footy, and GB lost the Euriopean Cup final to Germany 18 - 14

I saw a post on **coughWORLcough** from a guy looking to start a fantasy league for NFL. These things are usualy a bit of fun if run right so thought I'd drop a line in case anyones interested in joining it. Or maybe even starting soomething similar here.

I'd love to be in a fantasy league. They are fun and it keeps your interest in the game at an all time high. The only problem I have when I do one of those is I always think that a Broncos player is the best in every position.lol

Who plays on these Aussie gridiron teams? Ex-league and union players? How many teams are there? How old are the players?

Sydney has it's own competition and there are a fair few teams. I'm not too sure what the playing numbers are but the guys are all fairly young.

Canadian Steve,

These numbers are for Div.1 teams only. The amount varies for Jr's & colts. NSWhas about 10 teams this season.Queersland has about 10 as well. ACT has 5. S.A has 6. W.A has 6. I think this is right but if its not it should be close. Player numbers vary but most can nearly field a different Offense & Defensive lineup. Alot of players have a league/uninon background but theres still quite a few that are playing their first contact sport. As for the ages, Juniors are 14-17, Colts 18-21 & Div.1 is obviously open. Ages on my team vary from 18 up to around mid 30's. If your interested in anything else try here http://www.gridironaustralia.org.au/. We have 4 seppos coming to play this season. 2 played 4 years of college & the other 2 played 2. Should be interesting to see what they bring.

That's a good website. The sport is much more organized there than I imagined. I knew they were playing in Britain and Europe, not not Aus and NZ. It's impressive that one player from WA is going to play in the US on a college scholarship. It didn't say in the website - is he a position player or a kicker?
Do you think the game there will ever get popular enough in Aus to threaten your traditional codes?

It will never threaten League, Union or AFL. It will no doubt get bigger as each season is bringing a few more players & the Jr/Colt sides are growing aswell but for a sport thats only a little over 10yrs old here it still has a long way to go. What I'd like to see is a few State games being played before league games. Even if it was only 2 halves of 10 or 15 mins, just getting it out in front of the mainstream sporting public would give us some sort of boost.
From memory the WA player is a punter. Like D.Bennett he has an AFL background & if he can consistantly kick with accuracy the wraps on him are that he will go a long way.
Yes, seppo's are Americans. It's short for septic tanks which in turn is rhyming slang for yanks.
