The Australian Schoolboys team has defeated the British Amateur Rugby League Association (BARLA) Young Lions by 62 to 12 at Kougari Oval.
Australia led 28 - 6 at half time and were too classy and speedy for their determined opposition. The final score did not reflect the flow of the game with field position fairly evenly shared. The first half particularly was littered with handling errors and frequent stoppages by a zealous referee.
Five-eighth Michael Bond looked dangerous early, being involved in two tries but was unfortuantely taken from the field with an ankle injury in the 30th minute. His replacement Michael Dobson had a fine match, showing speed and agility while organising his runners.
Greg Inglis had a big night, scoring 22 points with a try and nine conversions. In a highlight, his line drop-out in the first half found touch 13 metres from the BARLA tryline. Inglis made a terrific burst in the second half, only to be cleaned up by a punishing cover defending tackle by Liam Morley.
The match didn't lack fire and eventually giant Australian prop Daniel Backo and BARLA's Luke Bassett were sin-binned after repeated clashes.
Australian Schoolboys 62 (Kade Snowden 3, Michael Dobson 2, Jarrod Mullen 2, Michael Lett, Junior Moors, Daniel Backo, Greg Inglis tries; Inglis 9 goals) def BARLA 12 (Richard Hulme, Daniel Kermond tries; Paul Crook 2 goals)
