Australian T20 shakeup required

Australia have traditionally felt that they can win any 50 over world cup they enter. That's because of our depth, we are pretty consistent in being in the top 3 teams in the world.

T20 is different. The nature of the game brings teams closer together as far as talent, luck and big moments are concerned. Going into this world cup there were probably 6 teams pretty close together: England, India, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and West Indies not far behind them. The minnows too are a lot closer to the big guys as well.

Because of this closeness the format of the tournament means that if you lose one game you're reliant on other results and net run rate to get you through. Last time we slipped through on NRR and were able to muscle our way to victory with a team of good cricketers. This year our weaknesses and players who had gone on too long were exposed.

I think we split the coaching roles, with a head coach for tests (McDonald) and a head coach focusing on white ball cricket, in particular t20. Pick players that you think can win you the world cup, not players who want to be there. Finch and a couple of other players were selfish and wanted to play on when it was clear they were past it or not suitable and the selectors didn't have the guts to tap them on the shoulder.

We then have to change our outlook to not winning the next WC but using it as a step to win the one after. That means a lot of changes.
Out immediately:
Finch - selfish stuff, derailed this campaign.
Wade - there are better younger alternatives
Smith - never looks like he actually enjoys this format.
Warner - looks old with the bat.
Phase out:
Marsh
Stoinis
Maxwell
These guys are all in their 30s a decision has to be made whether they'll be there in 4 years time.

Bowlers:
Cummins, although class, for mine isn't suited to t20.
Hazelwood, like Smith doesn't look like he wants to be there at times
Starc is Starc.
Zampa is our best t20 asset and I reckon should be groomed as captain.

Not many players knocking on the door in the BBL though.

If we're not cutting Finch first then it doesn't matter what we do.
I think Wade pretty much confirmed that he's done after this.
Cummins has been a disappointment.
Warner used his second wind last world cup and doesn't seem to have much left.
Smithy doesn't seem to be the answer either. He wants to be a hitter instead of a manager. Nothing wrong with hitting singles every ball and feeding someone else the strike knowing you can accelerate later.

We need to have top down review of the whole thing. Our selectors and management will probably say "we only missed out on run rate so just unlucky." Then do nothing while missing the fact that every single opportunity we had to make a difference to out catastrophic NRR we blew.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is many better options to come in. Depth is very skinny.

Green, Ellis and Head would have to be upgrades over some of the incumbents. McDemott, Sams, Inglis and Phillippe are the next best performers at state level, but haven't shown a lot when given opportunities for Australia. I don't think these guys would win the WC.

In short, last year was a complete fluke. We won every toss, and managed to get one of the top 6 catch fire in every run chase. This can happen in T20, but the batting line-up looks pretty sketchy compare to the top 3 or 4 teams.

Finch said he was retiring after the WC, but f**k me, we should have dropped him.

I think he was a major player in our not getting to the finals, we carried him for far too long and our NRR suffered.

It's a dilemma for me as I would normally say time for a clean out and throw in some youngsters but do you want youngsters playing this hit and giggle game that can wreck their technique and temperament?

I guess we look to the big wank to see who we think has a T20 future without being a 4/5 day player.

Also, our selectors need a clean out, Bailey says Richardson is a death bowler and drops Starc, and look how that worked out. He always raved on about Finch's record but ignored his current form.

Vetori seemed to distance himself from the decision "its what the hierarchy decided", seems he has more sense than our hierachy.

I'd be open to having Vetori as coach if he was interested. Has a heap of experience doing that.
With the squad, I think we need that mix of youth and experience. I don't mind the idea of some players being specialist limited overs players, as other players seem better at the long form. Problem being that T20 is the more lucrative, so providing incentive to play test cricket is a challenge.

BBL should be a factory for producing our T20 squad or it's useless. We seem to go with a lot of players in the test team who don't play a whole lot of T20. That comes back on selectors.

Eg. Cummins being great at test cricket, mixed results in limited overs. I was going to use Maxwell as an opposite example, but he's frustrating in both. Jaw droppingly brilliant one shot, braindead the next.

Just gotta accept that a rebuild isn't going to happen over night.
Bringing tactics into the team might be good too. We seem to blindly follow a script and can't adjust to situations that are good or bad.

We just don't have the talent.

The crop between 25 and 30 years of age are decent but don't look like being world class.

It's why we have persisted with this aging team as there aren't enough coming through to challenge them.

Green
Phillipe
Head {c}
McDermott
Stoinis
Maxwell
David
Sams/Agar (or another spinner, whatever, pitch depending)
Ellis
Meredith
Zampa

I don't care a lot about T20 but I can't fathom why the bulk of our international side is f**ken blokes who opt out of the BBL for a rest?

You could probs change the above squad about, but let's get a dedicated T20 squad and stop trying to play a Diet ODI lineup

Yup id go with somthing like that

Id selfishly hide Green from T20 for now
McDermott to open, MMarsh at 4 and (c)
Inglis at 3
Sean Abbott in there possibly

Pends how he goes this BBL season Id look at giving someone like Ben Manenti a crack as a fresh spin option

Love to see a complete overhaul tbh

Hearing we play our next T20i next August. Thats a long way away

BBL form this summer, whilst a guide (not a good one at that), wont mean too much picking that team/squad. Finch will be 37yo next year. Big piss take if he is selected

IPL form may get some blokes in ? IPL 2023 March 25 - May 28th

The ODI WC is on Oct/Nov window next year in INDIA
