Australian avocado growers are tipping the Manly Sea Eagles to win the NRL premiership in a Sea Eagles v. Bulldogs Grand Final.
Currently the Dragons are sitting at the top of the NRL table but it's the Sea Eagles at the top of the NRL One Community avocado recipe competition which aims to teach footy fans about healthy eating.
"Sea Eagles and Dragons fans have got behind their team at the games and at home," says rugby league great and One Community ambassador, Mario Fenech.
"I can't say that eating avocados will bring either team the NRL trophy, but the support from their fans in the recipe competition appears to be buoying them toward victory," says Fenech.
While they have predicted the Sea Eagles and Bulldogs will go head to head in the Grand Final, the news is not so positive for the Cronulla Sharks who according to the Australian avocado growers will take this year's wooden spoon.
The recipe competition is a dual initiative of growers group, Avocados Australia and One Community's 'Eat Well, Play Well, Stay Well', health program. All clubs nominated a healthy avocado recipe and footy fans can vote for the best recipe to win tickets to the 2009 NRL Grand Final, a signed jersey from the winning team and cash donation to their club's healthy living program. Voting is at www.rugbyleague.com.au/onecommunity.com.au.
When a similar program ran in the United States, it accurately predicted the winner of the Super Bowl for five years in a row.
Based of the performance of the teams in the recipe competition, the NRL Grand Final will be contested by the Manly Sea Eagles and Canterbury Bulldogs. The avocado industry also tips St George Dragons, Parramatta Eels, whose mascot Eric the Eel exclusively consumes avocados, Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans, New Zealand Warriors and Melbourne Storm as outside chances.
The avocado recipe competition is part of Rugby League's One Community's health program aimed at reducing childhood obesity.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics' National Health Survey of 2007-08 (released in May 2009), the proportion of obese children increased significantly from 5.2% in 1995 to 7.8%. In fact, the number of obese boys doubled from 4.5% to 9.7%.
"Physical exercise and healthy eating are the two lynchpins in children's health. We believe that Rugby League can help tackle childhood obesity head on using the clout of our footy heroes who are particularly inspiring to young boys," says Fenech.

Avocados Australia's involvement with Rugby League was inspired by American avocado industry's partnership with the Super Bowl. On Super Bowl Sunday alone, more than 10 million kilos of avocados are consumed as Americans swap fatty snacks for healthy guacamole. In Australia, Avocados and football share the same 'season'.
"Parents need to teach their kids about healthy eating and that starts in the home. What better way to set an example than with a game of footy on the television, some friends over and a bunch of healthy snacks on the table?" Fenech says.
