Wednesday October 1 (school holidays)
Buses are Leaving from Canterbury Leagues Club from 9:30am to First Fleet Park, meeting at 10am. Then Walking to Governor Macquarie Tower.

= Kevin Stewart =
We want to parade all the people who will be affected. We want to have our junior footballers there in their football gear, our bingo players and our entertainers, the many service providers who rely on clubs. We want to make this a very big rally so that we can make a very big point to the government - DO NOT DESTROY OUR CLUBS.

Buses are also leaving from Revesby Workers and other community clubs.
Please support this issue, contact your local club.

Is there a rally to support the tax?

We can get people who are on public hospital waiting lists to talk.

As opposed to the countless hordes who will never see their own fountain in the foyer :(

No better way to get the public offside than to stage a protest - especially one that exploits kids

I suspect this rally will have as much effect on government decisions as those earlier ones did, too.

and firm anti club sentiment as well. the usual outcome of such protests is a public reaction that sees more people siding with the protestees as opposed to the protestors.

Difference between you and me miller is that I don't question their right to have a protest - rallies are an acceptable outlet in a democratic nation.

And Moffo - it ain't that hard to see what tax you are paying if you pay attention but hey, most people don't see something until it is used to bludgeon them around the head a bit...

i just think the protesting is not always the answer as most the time it turns into a few idiots destroying the full purpose.

Certain factions always go to far weather they be right or wrong.

So, seeing what youve seen, do u believe Australia is a democracy? ... that is the bigger question.

yes, minority groups and their mob mentalities do not hold as much sway as majority voters in the polling booths.

Yes. But, outside its purest form, democracy does not mean that elected leaders necessarily follow the majority view on all issues.

Carr and Egan know that all taxes are unpopular. They are also confident that the clubs are bluffing (again) because something didn't go their way. Voters will only get genuinely pissed off with this tax if a club or two does fall over as a result of it, and the government is betting they won't. That being the case, the current Singo-induced agitation will die down well before anyone is called to account in an election over this issue.

even if a club or two does fall down and "jobs are lost" as they say, think of the boon for the restaurants and cafe's that will be able to compete with dirt cheap subsidised from addictive gambling meals from clubs, and the jobs created there.

Quite a simplistic view Syphon. If some clubs do fall over think of the price hikes cafes and restaurants will intorduce with less competition.

If you honestly think prices will go down, I have some land in Sydney Harbour you may be interested in.

Prices only drop when there is increased competition, not less.

I also can't believe how some of the posters have been sucked in by Carr and Egans propoganda.

NSW is already th emost expensive state to live in but you blokes think it's ok to introduce more taxes that eat away at our hard earned.

Also, I haven't seen one post putting the onus on the individual to help themselves. That is one of the oldest leftist approaches in the book blaming the clubs without even considering the gamblers role.

Millers and Dean, you are both off my Christmas card list. [-(

Well, I won't send you a card either, then.

Both sides are throwing out propaganda - I could just as easily say you've been sucked in by that of Clubs NSW but it wouldn't serve any purpose. I'm sure you've looked at the facts and made up your own mind, just as I have.

The fact is that hospitals need increased funding. The money has to come from somewhere. Efficiencies can of course be achieved over time but you're being unrealistic if you think they will ever go away. The inefficiencies in how clubs support the community are pretty serious too.

This is more a case of different spending priorities than additional taxation. We are told that the clubs are throwing out all this money into the community; the government wants to, effectively, redirect it to healthcare. Personally, I would prefer the government to spend the money in the community than the clubs.

As far as gamblers go, I haven't said anything about whether they should help themselves or not. This tax isn't about solving gambling addictions. That said, I, as a non-pokie playing footy fan, am being subsidised to watch my team. If elite-level footy clubs are so financially unviable without poker machines to prop them up, then maybe we have deeper problems in our game that should be addressed.

And if you have millers down as a leftist, I'm shocked!

It's ok to bring this tax in to help reduce hospital waiting lists?

Why did the government let it get to this state? Why have they mismanaged their finances so badly? Where is the money they are already supposed to be spending on health going?

Just keep on letting them take more and more, and get less and less for it.

Carr and his cronies are an embarassment to Australian politics. No, they're an embarassment to the NSW electorate. You know, those enlightened folks who hear about all of the things they are doing wrong, then go and vote them back in.

Actually they're an embarassment to the NSW Libs, who should have been able to win the last election easily in the context.

But are NSW clubs heavily taxed? That's really the question here. I think you'll find that relative to other states the clubs in NSW have a had a VERY easy ride in the respect of poker machine taxes. Compare the tax rates of clubs in NSW to those in QLD for example ... not even close.

Ignore the bluster from the clubs about going broke ... it's a total crock. They've spent over $2billion on capital works last year ... while only a $100 odd million on community groups ... funny how the community budgets are the first to get the chop ... real dedication to the community that.

Daniel.

Labor spent zillions on advertising at the election, sugar-coating their record in government while people were distracted by the Iraq war, which started only a week before the election.
