Bad News Everywhere

Over the past few weeks there's been plenty of disappointing news in relation to the Qld Cup and Brisbane lower grades. Here's some of them:

<ul> [*]Qld Cup may collaspe at the end of the year unless the NRL can contribute some funds to it. [*]Bundy Rum will pull out as major sponsor of the Qld Cup at the end of the year. [*]Quest Classifieds have already pulled the plugasmajor sponsors of Brisbane A Grade and Colts. (and, despite this, the two competitions will still be named the Quest Classified Cup) [*]ABC have announced they will be revamping their sports schedule and that will likely mean the end of the live Qld Cup matches on Saturday in Qld.[/list] Surely we couldn't get anymore bad news.

So Bundy have abandoned league altogether in favour of toffball? If I drank the stuff(and I don't) I would boycott their products as a protest. Do you think anyone esle will come on board as a major sponsor and is any other station likely to pick up the coverage?

Channel 9 used to cover the BRL comp in the early 1990's (mudcan clear this up if I'm incorrect) but I'd doubt they or any commercial station would pick it up. They can't even bother putting up the Qld Cup results in the news.

As for another major sponsor,I don't know. Why would anyone want be a sponsor with the way the QRL promote the competition (ievery little at all)?

Couldn't channel seven pick it up fairly cheaply to make inroads into league territory? If I was Stokes i'd seriously consider it.

There was a proposal this year to have First Division matches screened on ABC. It would give the regional/country viewers great access to some very good football. They are neglected by pay tv and Channel 9 at present.
This idea was vetoed at the NSWRL meeting by representatives of the Packer organisation.
They did not want the competition, they are used to league being their chattel, god forbid that league coverage might benefit the regional areas.
Until these types of conflicts of interest are removed league will suffer on television

Beast,
That was the most disgracefull self interested political maneouvering that's ever been conducted within theNSWRL. In one fell swoop they have killed off thegreatest potential surge of interest they could have had. Anf for what, whose interest is being loked after? Not RL's that's for bloody sure, sack the bloody lot of em.

From what I've read, it's not just the local Qld Cup matches the ABC that will be axed. Sports such as club rugby in Sydney and Brisbane, VFL games, the local AFL comps in SA, WA and Tas, basketball, netball and lawn bowls look set for the chop.

Perhaps an opportunity for channel 7 or 10 to get some ratings, maybe ?

Buy Beenleigh Rum - tastes better anyway Bundy is kids Rum

Put your adds in the Trading Post - screw Quest

Drink Home Brew - XXXX (owned by ozbash's mates anyway) have pulled out of league in queensland also

As for the ABC that'll be their loss. It out-rates the AFL in Queensland. What are they going to find thats better eh ? Some pommy movies set in 1863 about mrs deavoinshires buttercakes ? Here's a tip - they'll be back.

As for tv coverage of Qld Cup and First Div, Country Knockout games I have only one thing to say - Rugby League Channel on Pay TV.

There that's my 2 cents worth

pepe, neither do Wests, Souths, Wasts, Logan and Wynnum. The Tigers and the Seagulls have leagues club web sites but there is nothing on their football teams on these sites.

you would think it would be compulsary for bundy cup teams to have a website,i'm sure the sponsors would appreciate it not to mention the supporters, if the comp wants to be taken seriously they have to get there act in order.

matt i was chasing up a picture of anorths guernsey for gavbt last week on the net, could'nt find one damm picture would you believe, can you paste a picture on the best gurnsey post if you have one, thanks.

I know pepe - I'm saying that is the best chance for secondary comps to get coverage - if a channel devoted to league was started.

I run a Redcliffe Dolphins site and am looking for a dedicated fans to run sites for the other clubs. So far I have Wests, Wynnum, Brothers-Valleysand Souths sites lined up for construction in the off season.

The QRL is investigating a new website which would include Club sites of some promise including forums and merchandising. This is proabbly going to happen next season.

pepe, I would have to take a photo whenever Norths are playing to get you a pic of the Devils guernsey. Since, the Devils are almostcertain to get at least one sideon grand final day (given that they're won minor premierships in both Colts &amp; A Grade that's a good possibility), I can probably get you that pic then.
