Wonder if FOFX will bag the American government, or is that politically incorrect now that the President is black?

imagine if RATM was still kicking out new albums, i doubt they would rip on the first black president

I think these protest band lose their credibility once they start making mega bucks, like RATM and NOFX.
They befoul the ideology/political/ economic system that is the foundation of their financial success. The whole anti establishment and anti capitalism loses its punch once the bands make it big. Still great music though..

Anyway I'm obsessed with Bad Religion- Sorrow

The problem I have with the whole 'Bush is evil' ideology is that anyone could say s**t about him and it would go unopposed because he is "Like, the worst President EVER." FFS even Pink wrote a song dissing him! He was such an easy target right from the moment he took office anyway:

Southerner? Check.
Republican? Check.
Father was a rich Southern Republican? Check and check.

You ask most people on the street who thought Bush was the Anti-Christ why they thought so and they wouldn't be able to think of anything but the Iraq war. Fact is (IMO) even if Gore had been elected in 2000 America would have gone down much the same part.

I will say now that any rock band who disses Obama for anything (and despite the hordes who are well and truly on the "Yes we can!" bandwagon, there will be things to critiscize about his term in office) will have my respect for having the balls to do so.

see people like pink doing this took away from the bands who are generally smart lyricists who have been writing political music for a long time such as bad religion, propagandhi and nofx just from punk circles. Some f**king bleach blonde bitch with an army of writers who is fake as all f**k writing these songs disgusted me. As does pink in general

thankyou
that is elegantly put.
its true however that once a "anti-establishment" band hits it big time they lose me pretty swiftly.
id rather hear just the raw music written by bands who are just playing to get a message across and because they are actually gifted. Some of these artists now have a big fat 0 in talent and just wrap a fake image around themselves to selll albums. Its like watching Vanilla Ice make it bigtime all over again. I mean for christ sake if i had $10,000 worth of electronic equipment i reckon i could make my voice sound better than half of the new pop "stars".
but yes RATM did produce some moving and decent material which i still listen to today.

Good question and a fair call. Bush is out, it's a new world but people still have a bug up their arse about him.

I'm don't really have an opinion on Barack Obama and the issue of his race but thus far I'm just sick to death of hearing about him.

Having said all that though Fat Mike will still be pissing and moaning about Dubya. Still wanna go to this show though! Probably the Monday show in Melbourne.

It's bands like them and Green Day that make me laugh: "I hate America and everything it stands for but I'll take advantage of its' freedoms to get rich!"

Mind you, I don't mind SOAD at all, and they've always been writing protest songs. I'll say it again: The first artist to write a song dissing Obama will have my kudos, irrespective of whether or not I agree with what they're dissing him for. The fact that they go there in the first place will prove that they have the balls punk rock was built on. I'm not going to hold my breath though....

ON Nofx they largely drifted away from the straight up anti-bush doctrine of war on errorism to a more anti-religion theme on more recent stuff

not that their more recent stuff is particularly great compared to previous releases

f**k yeah! Bad Religion are certainly making up for the amount of times they cancelled on us! Im loving the current theme of bringing out 2 90s bands in one show, once a year, last year was pennywise and the vandals which was soooo awesome and this year another 2 mega awesome bands.

I remember when NOFX wasnt considered a political band at all, they just sung songs about stupid stuff, i even remember some huge nofx fan say he didnt like pennywise coz they were too "preachy" lol. With Bush out, maybe NOFX will become all about fun stuff again.

As for BR, man im f**king pumped for this sh*t, 2007 was so awesome

Have always loved Green Day but that really go to me when they played in Melbourne in 2005 on the first American Idiot Tour. Billie Joe is up there saying "f**k Bush" and the place is full of 14-16 year olds who just went ape-sh*t and don't really have any understanding of why people say things like that and/or speak out against governments.

I think there is a forum for that sort of behavior and that rock and roll is a fantastic medium to do it but it should be pitched at a more learned or "experienced" audience.

I am pissed off because the whole nature of the protest song in its' original form (speaking out against an injustice you believe in and f**k what other people think) has now become little more than a popularity bandwagon.

One of my favorite protest songs was one I saw on 'Rage' early one morning two years ago, the song was by a band called 'One for the Brave' and the videoclip showed footage of riots and government oppression in 3rd world/ communist countries, including footage from the Tianammen Square massacre. Never seen the clip before or since, can't find it anywhere on youtube unfortunately.

meh, saw BR when they toured last, wasnt that impressed. Mid youth crisis owned their old asses.

Fat mike has to be the smartest and dumdbest man in punk, smartest for gettin to where he is and spouting all the bullsh*t he does and dumbest because the dead sh*t passed on releasing the latest Propagandhi album which rips anything ever released on his sh*tty label.

Fat Wreck is an awesome label for punk music.

and i would say NOFX will find a way to rip on Obama some how but they have mostly gone onto a religion theme in the albums Wolves in Wolves Clothing and Coaster.

Fat Mike writes the best lyrics he is a very smart dude IMO.He does very simple things but noone else thinks of doing like the decline the lyrics in that personifying Ceratonine (not sure of the spelling) i just rekon he is a smart guy in his own right.
