Balin Cupples to trial with the Bulldogs

In recruitment news the Bears have signed exciting centre Balin Cupples from Tweed Seagulls in a joint deal with NRL Premiers the Bulldogs. Cupples, who scored 16 tries in the Queensland Cup last year and was part of the Residents team that traveled to Perth, will spend four weeks training with the Bulldogs in January and February. He will play at least one trial game with the Bulldogs Premier League team and they will then make a decision whether he stays in Sydney or returns back to the Bears to start the season.

Coach Rick Stone said the signing was a great acquisition for the Bears. "Balin is a genuine try scorer with plenty of speed. Every side can do with a player of his quality".

Looks like the little sh*t may get the chance to bite the Tigers in the arse if he is successful in gaining a spot with the dogs.

I guess the "Bears" you're mentioning are the Burleigh Bears, the junior feeder club to the Bulldogs in Qld. Somehow can't see him troubling us in front of Utai, Harris, Tonga, El Masri, Lolesi & every other bastard they're likely to unearth next year!

Enjoy the sunshine Balin, and prepare for your future outside footy.

To be honost, I've never seen him play.

Sounds like he is a Centre/Winger - It'll be hard for him to crack the starting 17 as Miracle Balls said.

How old is this kid?

He's no kid mate, played a couple of years Premier League for Balmain but never made the step up. Don't want to be too harsh on him, he did play some good footy for us, just think the article may have been a bit of an overstatement. Having said that, this time last year Willie Tonga was being cut as a Parra Premier Leaguer but those damn Dogs ended up seeing something in him.

Best of luck Balin, hope you get a chance to realise your dreams.

He's about 23/24

Balins biggest problem is that he's too small for the centres in first grade, clubs try and put him on the wing but despite being one of the quickest players going around he really isn't a winger.

He's the only player I've ever WISHED would run sideways rather than try and break every tackle - he gets smashed but he's bloody gutsy!

I doubt he'll play first grade at the dogs but I don't look forward to facing him in PL either.

he will not make the first grade side at the dogs. he will find it hard to with young guns such as Trent Cutler & Cameron Phelphs knocking on the door to the top side. These kids should be in action during the WCC. He will be good for premier league side.

is that true, how you know that????

I play Cricket with him, I asked him if he would re-sign, he said he would go where the money is. But I'm not sure if that means he will definately go to the highest bidder, he may stay at 'Dogs for a little less, he might not.

I think a lot depends on what opportunities present themselves this year. He is a very good prospect.

In saying that he nearly signed for the storm a few years back

How long back is a few years? He is only just out of school, I don't think you would see a school kid move to another state at 17/18 just yet.

 What a difference 18 months can make, since leaving Wests Tigers, under some incredible coaching and a break from the rat race to finish his University degree he's back as enthusiastic as ever.
Dont underate a young mans dream and passion to succeed.
As for the sunshine its raining up this way today and his future is cemented career wise as well as prospects outside of football. He's too intelligent to know life only rests in the hands of League men and fans.Last year saw an injury free, stronger than ever player enjoy his football and now hungry to return to the NRL fold.
Dont right him off just yet.!!! ;-) At the end of the day a mans future only lies within the heart of the man.His heart lies with Rugby League.

Well Balin has been named in the Bulldogs side to take on the Raiders in a trial match on the weekend. The unfortunate thing is he has been named on the wing rather than in the centres where he plays his best footy. Could be the difference between gaining a contract and going back to Burleigh in the Qld Cup.

Ummm rumour has it they will give him a run in the centres ,he'll be starting on the wing and may be moved in as game progresses. What ever position he'll give it his all I'm sure. :)

so its trialists

well I hope he manages to get a spot - one thing I know is there isn't likely to be a player that will put more effort in and that should count for something

Was the incredible coaching from Steve Murphy?
