The premiers are locked in contract talks with captain Matt Orford as well as international wingers David Williams and Michael Robertson, and young forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

While Williams and Robertson are expected to remain, the Sea Eagles have begun to free-up money under the salary cap for Orford and Waerea-Hargreaves by offering winger Michael Bani to North Queensland for the next two seasons.

Bani, who has two years remaining on his existing deal, is due to receive $150,000 in 2010 and $170,000 in 2011. While its unlikely the Cowboys would pay his entire contract, they could take Bani if the Sea Eagles agree to pay part of the bill.

Even then that may not be enough to keep Orford and Waerea-Hargreaves. Orford will almost certainly have to take a pay cut to stay at Brookvale.

I like Bani but im not sure we really need him. Im very happy with Farrar and Williams on the wings and Don Malone is still waiting in the wings for us.

Yeah I'm happy with J Williams and Farrar at the moment (I'd be happier if John Williams got the ball more often though).

And we have enough second-rate wingers thank you very much - Hegarty and Ty Williams. Plenty of depth there - not worth another $170,000 in that position.

I like Bani but yeah Cows have already paid quite a bit for new players.
If he was cheap sure, I doubt he would be though.

If I were going to spend money on new players I'd prefer to spend it on a fullback or prop.

We've got plenty of wingers and centres.

When B Stewart got injured i seem to remember a lot of Manly supporters calling for Bani to play fullback rather than Robertson. I dont know if he's always been a winger so id be interested to hear from some Manly fans about this. Having said that, even if he is a good FB i dont think we need to be looking for Bowens replacement for a while.

yeah i agree with everyone Farrar and Williams are pretty solid wingers and ty wiliams and hegs are always there if one of them got injured and there ok....nothing special. ty williams has never hit good form since his injury....f**king billy slater. anyway i just don't see room for bani, I actually don't see any positions where we need a new player except a new prop would always be nice.

From a eagles supporter view, his defence is suspect, hence i am happy he was never chosen at Fullback

Maybe worth signing for depth in a few seasons time - Hegs and Ty Williams aren't getting any younger.

But I wouldn't pay any more than $100,000 for him.

BEN Farrar could become Brett Stewart's short-term replacement at Manly with the Sea Eagles negotiating to swap Michael Bani for the Cowboys flyer.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal the two clubs are close to signing off on a deal which will see Farrar, a Newcastle junior, join the Sea Eagles and Bani move to North Queensland. Manly see former dugong hunter Bani as only a winger and are interested in Farrar because he can also play fullback, handy given Stewart's injury and pending court case.
We also understand Bani is keen to make the trip to Townsville where he will be closer to his family, who live on the Torres Strait Island of Mabuiag.
"They have been in talks and it looks as though something will happen in the next 24 hours," a source close to the Sea Eagles said. "It probably will be a good move for both of them.
"Bani will be closer to his family and Farrar will get a chance at fullback and I think his family is from Newcastle."
Bani stormed into first grade during 2007 but injury allowed cult hero David "The Wolfman" Williams to take his place last year when Manly won the premiership.

Doubt it. We have plenty of wingers already - what we lack is depth at fullback. I don't think we'd let Farrar go without kicking and screaming. And he'd be stupid to go as well - he won't get a gig in first grade at the Sea Eagles once Brett Stewart is back from injury, not with Robertson and Williams on the wing.

    Stay in Townsville, Ben.

I really hope this isnt true, not that i think Bani is a bad player, i just dont know why we would do this trade.....

Could we somehow disguise Shannon Hegarty to look like Ben Farrar and send him instead?

    Oh hell no, not Farrar.
Hmmm...I hope it's not true - Ben has been at the Cows for a little while now and seems happy.
I like Bani....like > Ty Williams > Shannon Hegarty and on par with John Williams...but not worth Farrar.

I doubt it is. I can't understand why Ben Farrar would want to leave. He's cemented his place in first grade on the wings, and he knows that he's our backup fullback if anything happens to Bowen. He knows he's important to the team, and he's playing good footy.

And he's from NEWCASTLE. Maybe if the Knights wanted to swap him for McManus or something (Darwin is closer to Townsville than Newy is) I could understand - but MANLY? It's almost as far away from Newcastle as Townsville is.

If he went to the Eagles he'd play first grade until Stewart was fit again, and then he'd go back to playing park footy and hoping for an injury. At the Cowboys he's almost guaranteed a regular starting spot on the wing and anywher ein the backline if there's an injury.

    Farrar swap almost done
    JOSH ALSTON
    June 4th, 2009
THE Cowboys will today announce the signing of Manly's Michael Bani with Ben Farrar to head to Brookvale in a mid-season swap.
The only thing that could prevent the trade happening will be a final medical in Sydney, although Cowboys officials are confident that is a formality and the deal will be struck.
North Queensland football manager Dean Lance said club medical staff were pleased with the results of Tuesday's meeting with the specialist but wanted some final niggles assessed before making the leap.
"Michael Bani has seen a specialist we organised in Sydney, there's just something we want to get confirmed from the doctor in Sydney and once that's done (the deal will be official)," Lance said.
"He's ticked all the boxes and we'll continue to keep the process rolling ... we're just making sure we dot the i's and cross the t's."
Bani has been sidelined in recent weeks with a knee injury and also suffered a neck injury last season. The Cowboys want to make sure the problems aren't long-term before making the final deal.
Lance said Bani was currently training and expected the final appointment to pave the way for his move north.
"A few little things came up in the scan so we want Michael to go back and see the doctor, I spoke to him today and he's running and it's all good reports," Lance said.
"He's a fit young athlete who is ready ... we just want to confirm it and cover all bases."
Farrar, a Newcastle native, stands to come out ahead in the deal as well, with the swap ensuring both players are signed for two further seasons beyond this season.
Farrar is off-contract with the Cowboys at the end of the year.
"Ben's good, he's been very patient," Lance said.
"He's training at the moment and this time tomorrow afternoon if it is definitely on, then Ben will start organising to make the move. Until that happens all systems are go.
"The situation is he's either going to play with us for the rest of the year or go to a good club like Manly with the security of two years on top of that so he's not whingeing at all.
"They understand where they are, we've been very up-front with him and Michael Bani."
Farrar, 22, has been in career-best form this season, bagging five tries and playing all but one game.
``I love Ben Farrar, I think he's been terrific," Lance said.
"He's a fabulous young athlete and he's really playing to the best of his ability and going really well.
"In saying that, Michael Bani has pure speed and is a good athlete, he's a big, strong young thing and I know (coach) Neil (Henry) is impressed with his attributes – and he's a Thursday Island boy.
I know Michael is very keen to get up this neck of the woods and we're very keen to see (it) happen."

Sounds like they were never planning on re-signing him. I am SUPER pissed at this. It's a very very very bad decision. Farrar's just as good as Bani on the wing and better anywhere else in the backline. We don't need more specialist wingers - we need a utility back who can cover 1-5.

If he does go, I wish him well. And I hope he has a blinder against us later in the season and reminds Cowboys Management of the stupid decision they've made.

pffffft, ty is past his use by date I'm afraid. He isn't fast enough to be a winger these days.
