Barnes picks Reds over Broncos
12:53 PM May 26
Queensland Reds fly half Berrick Barnes has opted to stay with the struggling Super 14 side, knocking back a chance to return to National Rugby League side the Brisbane Broncos.
The 19-year-old former league player has signed a three-year deal with the Reds, turning his back on a get-out clause in his previous deal which would have allowed him to return to the Broncos next season.
Barnes confirmed he was staying on in the hope of seeing better days at the Reds, who struggled throughout this Super 14 season but will go into next year's campaign under new coach Eddie Jones.

"I want to be on board to be part of the good times ahead," Barnes said in a statement released by the Reds.
"I've enjoyed this year thoroughly and I'm looking forward to the next couple of years."
Prop Rodney Blake has also re-signed with the Reds, turning down offers from the Waratahs and a French side to stay in Brisbane.
But Broncos coach Wayne Bennett said he believed it was only a matter of time before Barnes returned to the Broncos.
"I think the Broncos mean a lot to him, as a kid they did and that's why he came here," he said.
"I think when he's met his targets over there and his goals, he'll probably think: 'I've done this, can I go back and play this other game now, and can I be as good at that as I am at this one.'"

Bad news for the broncos. they need a good halfback.

I love Bennett's call at the end. I seem to remember similar comments re: Tuqiri and Sailor. Face it Wayne, he's gone.

Bennett said after Barnes has achieved what he wants in rugby. That could be a few years yet. Tuqiri and Sailor had already achieved in league - no sense revisiting.

Is Larkham gonna make it to the next world cup? Barnes could get some competition form Rogers and Helengahu. :?

Lol no where near. But Daniel ain't that great at 5/8. Kicking game is suspect and his defence was the same. Rogers defence worries but could be given another shot although I feel hes more a fullback. Barnes is the logical option. We may also have a bolter in Kurtley Beale who sounds like a new Larkham.

Kurtley Beale will be better than Larkham. Mark Ella said that he is the new Mark Ella. Anybody who can remember Ella at his best (a try in each of the 1984 Grand Slam Tests, for example) can only hope that he is.
