Barrett to learn his fate on Friday

22 March 2004

A frustrated Trent Barrett won't know whether he needs surgery on his injured right knee until the end of the week.

The St George Illawarra captain tore cartilage in the knee during training last week and failed to travel with his NRL team to Auckland, where a depleted Dragons outfit notched an impressive 16-10 victory over the NZ Warriors.

Test five-eighth Barrett was due to visit a specialist today to find out whether he would need surgery but club doctor Paul Annett advised him to rest the leg for the remainder of the week before the injury was reassessed.

Barrett, who missed most of the 2003 season with ankle and knee injuries, had a cortisone injection today to reduce swelling in the knee, which occasionally locks up.

"There's a fair bit of damage in there but if I can get away with not having an arthroscope and just putting up with it I will," said Barrett.

"Until Friday I probably won't know much more.

"It's going to be sore after the injection for a few days anyway so I'll just have to wait and see."

Rated a slim chance of playing against Melbourne at Olympic Park on Sunday, Barrett's main focus is stringing some games together injury-free.

"I had most of last year off so I'm not looking to go under the knife again this early," the 26-year-old said.

"I'm sick of being hurt. I just need some good news and hope things get better in the next few days and I'll be OK."

Barrett said he was disappointed to miss the clash with the Warriors, but was ecstatic to see the Dragons win on the road without their captain, suspended prop Luke Bailey and former international centre Mark Gasnier (personal problems).

"The mood's a lot different to what it was last week (when the Dragons lost to Canberra)," Barrett said.

"Everyone really tried hard - that was the difference. The whole team lifted.

"There were a few knives out to get us all week, which I thought was unwarranted and uncalled for.

"The team really stuck together and that's what happens.

"A lot of times in sport when people are under fire they come good ... similar to what Parramatta did on the weekend - everyone had written them off and they beat the Broncos at home."

Hopefully the injury won't deteriorate and become a weekly problem like Timmin's knees.

Obviously the sooner he comes back the better but no-one, no matter how well paid, should be rushed straight back in to the team at the expense of any of the boys who won us the match in Auckland.

Cheers,
Ben S.
