Basket Case NRL Franchises

On NRL360 last night, Paul Kent asked NRL boss David Smith what he thought of the current model of franchises having little accountability to the NRL in the way they run their business and present themselves to the public. He gave the Eels history of fractured Boards as an example. He then asked what did he intend to do about it to rein in the clubs.

DS responded by saying that currently the clubs are awarded equal cash rather than on a need basis. This will change in the future and clubs will need to demonstrate that they have adhered to a new range of criteria which will include good governance (essentially how well we keep our house in order).

So the message is loud and clear to all the dickheads from both camps who see this club as being a vehicle to fuel their egos to back off otherwise the club, that they claim they love, will suffer financially.

So to Fat Tony, Ned Flanders and the always meddling Mr Burns - Time to pull your heads in merkins.

Bit confused . So if the clubs get cash on a need basis then wouldn't that mean the more poorly run clubs would get more cash therefore contradicting his point on paying well managed clubs ?

i'm hoping that anyone who runs for the board always runs for the right reasons and that is for the benefit of the club and it's members not for self interest.
We will see what the next 2 years brings shall we?

The NRL have an investment fund now of $200m. They can allocate funds to grass root schemes or to teams that relocate etc etc.

Aside from that, the current teams will need to tick all the boxes if they want all of the annual grant which is currently available to them.

In the long-term, I can't see the present system under which the football team franchises are mostly controlled by leagues clubs surviving (and I'm unconvinced that it should survive). Exactly how this will play out, I'm not sure, but as the $$$ involved in the game increase, the pressure to sell the franchises to an entity with strong incentives to maximise the value of the 'football franchise' will increase. But for the next 5-10 years we can sit back and watch Groundhog Day.

Frankly this sounds like Smith trying to deflect attention from the NRL's poor performance in governing the game. If he wants clubs to meet certain criteria then he should include history of cap rorting and off field player indescretions as part of that. I'm betting he won't.
