Battle of the Codes

Interesting piece in last weeks WA Sunday Times about the battle of the sports codes in Perth. AFL is doing very well with the WC Eagles the most profitable AFL club and the Dockers expected to increase their crowds to over 35,000 this season. The Force have exceeded expectations with an average crowd of over 25,000 and strong corporate support. The Glory have gone from best to worse soccer club with no owner and diminishing crowds. End of article had RL as the unknown "wildcard" with a comment from the NRL that is is committed to see an NRL club back in Perth by 2010 at the latest.

I don't know why you are so suprised, there is a huge expat south african population in the west who have been crying out for a rugby side in perth for a number of years.

And kiwis...and poms...and aussies.

A shame the NRL pulled the Reds out of Perth.

Do we need to introduce 2 sides in 2010 so we dont have the bye...
1 from WA and the second? SA perhaps?

Hallelujia brother! That's fantastic news if true.

And, if true, they'd want to get their fingers out and get moving with taking games and clinics over there. We can't go in cold and expect to succeed.

Apart from the obvious grass roots increased development and the courting of business support I hope to see:

2007 1 pre season NRL game & 2 NRL games
2008 2 World Cup games (one featuring Australia and One featuring England)
Announcement of a new Perth team on the back of the WC
2009 1 NRL game plus a SOO game
2010 Perth is back!

There is most definitely a niche market in Adelaide and Perth for league teams again. MES (Perth) holds 17,000 and Hindmarsh (Adelaide) holds 15,000.

In cities of over 1 million people, with correct market strategies, selling out those venues should not be that difficult for marquee games, and healthy crowds should be easy enough. Look at Woolongong, Townsville and Newcastle-And that is with very poor marketing by the NRL.

Of course, the naysayers will be in this thread in 2 seconds flat saying that the Central Coast and other heartland areas should get teams before Perth and Adelaide, but really, anyone who can't see the benifits of teams in all of the mainland capital cities has rocks in their heads.

They are (unfortunately) getting better.

Yeah they got a bonus point for trying this week.... they're like the dumb fat kid at school who got the "hardest trier" award at the end of year prizegiving.

Both of the previous sides were reasonably supported. However I reckon that if two more sides are gonna come in, Perth & Central Coast are the way to go.

The primary reason Perth went belly up was because they were:

a-Forced to field a reserve grade side

and

b-Agreed to pay for their opponents airfares to and from Perth

Go to Qantas.com and check what it costs to fly from Sydney to Perth. Then multiply in by 40 (two teams of players plus coaches and support staff) and the fact that they had a poor deal with the WACA for ground rental didn't help either.
