Sixers team to beat,

Carlos back and you got the Edwards boys and Llyod Pope about to go to another level...

315071.4.jpg

Carlos Brathwaite is headed back to the BBL after re-signing with Sydney Sixers as they chase a hat-trick of titles.

The West Indies allrounder was a key part of the Sixers' title last season, particularly with the ball taking 16 wickets for the season. He claimed 4 for 18 in a win over Brisbane Heat and took 1 for 25 from four frugal overs in Sixers' Qualifier win over Perth Scorchers which secured them a home final.

Brathwaite, 33, had a lean season with the bat, but he did hit 21 off 12 balls to help Sixers steal an amazing win from Melbourne Stars on the Gold Coast early in their campaign and he cited Sixers' title ambitions as a key reason for his return.

"Obviously winning [BBL 10] and the team's success last year made it attractive to want to come back," he said. "As you get older you definitely want to be somewhere you can hopefully be challenging for trophies but at the Sixers, there is a deeper camaraderie and sense of family atmosphere.

"As a team, we went through a tumultuous season last year on the road without getting back to Sydney until the final, and we built a very strong bond. The BBL is one of the biggest T20 tournaments in the world and hopefully, that bond can help us to succeed again, this time in front of our fans at the SCG all season."

Brathwaite joins Englishman Tom Curran in Sixers' squad as the only two overseas at present. Curran withdrew from last season's BBL due to bubble fatigue but is expected to return to Sydney this season.

Sydney Sixers squad: Moises Henriques (capt), Sean Abbott, Carlos Brathwaite (West Indies), Daniel Christian, Tom Curran (England), Ben Dwarshuis, Jack Edwards, Mickey Edwards, Daniel Hughes, Stephen O'Keefe, Hayden Kerr, Nathan Lyon, Ben Manenti, Josh Philippe, Lloyd Pope, Jordan Silk.

I actuallly wonder if we're going to see the Afghan players like Rashid Khan with the situation in Afghanistan right now.

Business as usual apparently...

Taliban generously supporting cricket development in Afghanistan, says ACB CEO Hamid Shinwari

Speaking to India Today, Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO Hamid Shinwari said the Taliban will be supportive of cricket development in the country and the star players will not have any trouble representing the senior national team.

Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO Hamid Shinwari said the Taliban has been generously supporting cricket development since its inception and he doesn't see any impediments for the sport in the country even after the regime change.

Afghanistan is experiencing a crisis situation as the Taliban took over the country, forcing President Ashraf Ghani to flee. While millions have been affected, questions were raised over the future of Afghanistan cricket, which has been on the upswing. Afghanistan cricketers have gone to become global stars and the likes of Rashid Khan have often stressed how cricket bring joy and relief to the strife-torn nation.

Speaking to India Today Consulting Editor Rajdeep Sardesai, ACB CEO Shinwari said cricketing activities will resume with normalcy under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

"It is great to say the Taliban has been generously supporting cricket development in the country even since its inception. So far, I haven't seen any impediments to cricket development in the country. They have been supportive," Shinwari told India Today.

No worries for future of star players in Afghanistan: ACB CEO

Rubbishing reports that the Taliban troubled the ACB during the regime change, Shinwari said Afghanistan stars are not worried about the regime change.

"It was a plain rumour. We haven't experienced such an issue. They supported us even during the regime changes. I must thank them because we have been able to protect our property.

Kicks off Oct 14 in Tassie now

First 20 WBBL matches moved to Tasmania amid Covid disruption

Players, staff and officials arriving from New South Wales will undertake two weeks hard quarantine

Story Image

Tasmania will host the first 20 matches of the WBBL season as the tournament is restructured due to the ongoing Covid-19 border closures around Australia.

The competition, which had been due to start in Sydney, will still begin on its original date of October 14 with Sydney Sixers facing Melbourne Stars at Blundstone Arena. Matches will be also be staged at University of Tasmania Stadium and Invermay Park in Launceston.

For now, only the first two weeks of the tournament have been adjusted but there will likely be further amendments for the remaining fixtures. "The League will continue to monitor public health conditions, state border restrictions and their related impacts in relation to the remainder of the Weber WBBL|07 schedule," a statement said.

ESPNcricinfo understands that players, staff and officials will begin arriving in Tasmania next week. Those coming from New South Wales will be required to undertake two weeks hard quarantine while those traveling from Victoria will also need to quarantine but, currently, will be permitted to train.

Another factor in the Tasmania option was that, currently, the island is open to Queensland which means that players and officials involved in the Australia-India series will be able to fly directly into the competition providing there are no changes to regulations over the next month.

The final T20I of that series had been brought forward a day to allow extra travel time ahead of the WBBL.

"The League and all clubs thank Premier Gutwein and the Tasmanian Government for their support of the WBBL and Australian cricket," Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia's general manager of Big Bash Leagues, said. "We'd also like to thank Cricket Tasmania for the power of work they've put in to securing our safe passage to Tasmania and deliver the opening weeks of the tournament. We can't wait to arrive in Hobart and start our season."

Tasmania looks likely to lose its scheduled men's Test between Australia and Afghanistan in late November following Cricket Australia's stance against the match taking place should the Taliban not allow women to play sport. The Tasmania Premier had previously raised serious concerns of the match.

Last season the WBBL was played entirely in a Sydney-based hub while Tasmania staged one of the opening hubs of the BBL.

"This is fantastic news for Tasmanian cricket and we're thrilled to be able to play our part in ensuring the season gets away," Dominic Baker, the Cricket Tasmania CEO, said. "Following on from us hosting the first of the BBL hubs last year, we know this is something we can do, and do well, and we know Tasmanian cricket fans can't wait to come out and see some of the world's best female cricketers in action.
