Bear/Reds Merger

Yeah, write it in that the license goes to WA in the event of a split, same as Manly in the NE version and WA absolutely have a majority holding.
The NRL should have control over the license, the Northern Eagles merger would've been successful had this happened but once it was announced that the license would return to Manly if the merger failed both Ken Arthurson and Bob Fulton made sure that the merger was a failure. Honestly though who wouldn't.

Technically this thread was the 1st, it also probably served as an instigator for our thoughts on the WA and NS merging bid...
Well done Vee

Does that means Donkey's Singapore & hong Kong suggestions will lead to bids from those places?!

Three teams would be perfect for NZ. A Wellington team would be good as it would ensure the capitals of Australia and NZ are represented and can face off on ANZAC Day.

We need to get rid of the Roosters vs Dragons "ANZAC CUP" game, which is just a money grab by two low drawing Sydney clubs to draw a crowd that matches what the Broncos get at Lang Park 12 times a year.

Let the Canberra Raiders and Wellington Orcas battle it out for the ANZAC Cup, rotating each year between Canberra and Wellington, so that the game can mean something to everyone in Australia and NZ.
Why do you need to replace one game with another? Why not have Roosters v Dragons (Traditional rivals and first to adopt the Anzac clash concept), Canberra v Wellington (rotation basis for hosting) and Melb vs Warriors (Set it as a permanent fixture in NZ). Maybe even have a Cowboys v Broncos set up for Kapyong Day (24 Apr).

Not arguing that Roosters/Dragons saw value in setting up a permanent fixture on Anzac day; but its every other club that jumped on the bandwagon to sell special jerseys and try and fill their stadium over a P/H long weekend.

I mean, wtf does a bulldog have to do with Easter? Yet Souths and Canterbury almost always play over the Easter weekend.

Wasnt the souths dogs game mostly due to the Easter show being next door therefore an opportunity to attract people to Accor to watch a game whilst in the area?

Is there a nz holiday or celebration weekend that warriors could use to create something similar to the Australian event weekends?

@T-Boon is right about Newcastle absorbing the Central Coast. If teams like Cronulla, Dragons, Bulldogs and Tigers took their home matches against Newcastle to Central Coast Stadium then it would be a huge win for rugby league in the area.
As if the 3 Sydney teams would lose and move a home game to central coast and give knights 3 away games really close to there home area . C'mon Mann 🤣

If it draws a bigger crowd than what they'll get at their traditional home ground and the local council chip in some money then that would make it worthwhile. Money talks.

  • The game doesn't resonate with people who are not from eastern and southern Sydney.
  • Sydney shouldn't be centre of focus on an historically important day that means more to other cities that were impacted to a far greater extent by war.
  • Townsville is a garrison city and was left defenceless by the Australian government after the bombing of Darwin.
  • An ANZAC Day game in Townsville between Cowboys and Broncos would be a huge draw as the Brisbane Line defended Brisbane but not Townsville from any further attack by the Japanese.
  • An alternative would be Cowboys vs Raiders. It would be an opportunity to have the Prime Minister come into town and say sorry to North Queenslanders for leaving them open to the slaughter. This would allow the high drawing Cowboys vs Broncos game to played on another date, producing two sellout games for North Queensland.

The problem with any talk about moving games to the CC is that the stadium is too small to generate any more crowds than you would in Sydney.

I honestly don’t know why people are still arguing for a completely new entity on the CC. The area is too close to Sydney and Newcastle and thus 10 other sides and just as importantly the area is just not a big enough market or area to target.

Waitangi Day is 6 Feb (celebrating the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the Crown & Maori), too early for the NRL season.

We do have another NZ holiday in June/July now - Matariki (basically Maori New Year), which became a holiday this year.

It's always in a Friday, in mid-winter, however it's very variable because it's based on the Maori Lunar Calandar.. so could fall anywhere between 21 June & 19 July. (And no, I have no idea exactly how it's calculated..)

There are games in Sydney that draw less than 10k when an out of town team is involved. Newcastle isn't a big draw in Sydney.

If it gets kids in WA playing league, I am over who owns it.

Most kids want to play VFL, they do make great cricketers, therefore have the right stuff to be great league players.

As I understand it, they beat the Victorians at their own girls game.VFL.

Then again, how many Victorians play for the storm?

Maybe like cricketers, once every two decades.

Keith Miller, tumbleweeds, Bill Lawry, tumble weeds, Shane Warne, tumbleweeds.

In the mean time NSW, QLD and WA do the job.

It is no wonder they play thier own shyte game, as they are shyte at most things..

/rant

Get a WA team, not sure about enough quality players.
