Manly's Steve Menzies out for a month
Manly's NRL premiership campaign has been dealt a cruel blow after veteran backrower Steve Menzies was ruled out for up to a month with a broken hand.
Menzies, who sustained the injury in the closing stages of NSW's 16-14 State of Origin loss to Queensland on Wednesday night, will be replaced by utility Luke Williamson for Saturday's NRL clash with the Sydney Roosters.
The timing couldn't be any worse for the Sea Eagles, who need to snap a three-game losing streak in order to remain in the top eight.
"It's a bit of a bummer, it's very disappointing," Menzies said.
"I was making a tackle Cameron Smith in the last five minutes or so, I just fell down and felt it go.
"It wasn't hard or anything, I just felt the pain and it started swelling up a bit - and now the x-rays have come back broken.
"It's bad timing, missing a game through Origin, and I was really keen to get back and win some games and then you find out about this."
In contract news, speculation continues to mount that Sydney Roosters utility Craig Wing will not see out the final year of his contract with the club.
Penrith is the latest club reportedly interested in the NSW and Australia representative, despite the fact he is contracted to the Roosters till the end of next season.
"All I can say is they join a long list of clubs said to be interested in him, including St George Illawarra, Wests Tigers, South Sydney and the Western Force," Wing's manager, Steve Gillis, said.
"He hasn't got permission to negotiate and I haven't spoken to Penrith."
Meanwhile, Melbourne playmaker Scott Hill said he was seriously considering heading to the UK following interest from Super League clubs Salford, London Harlequins and Castleford.
Hill, also courted by Parramatta, said his preference would be to stick with Melbourne if he remained in the NRL, but indicated a move overseas did appeal.
"We'll probably end up there at some stage ... if everything works out and I get a good offer to go overseas that could potentially be our next move," he said.
"I've still got a couple of things to sort out with Melbourne and when I do that I'll make my decision."
Bulldogs utility Tony Grimaldi refuted suggestions he was set to retire and is hoping to play on for at least another year at the Bulldogs.
"I'm not ready to retire, I want to play definitely one more and I'm not ruling out another one after that," Grimaldi said.
Asked if he was confident of extending his stay at Belmore, Grimaldi said: "I hope so, but they couldn't offer Roy (Asotasi) much, so I'm not really confident."
Bulldogs CEO Malcolm Noad said the club would sit down with Grimaldi next week to discuss his future.
Newcastle is firming for the signature of former Queensland three-quarter Chris Walker, while North Queensland has dropped out of the running for Canberra's veteran playmaker Jason Smith, leaving the Roosters and another NRL club in the frame.
And the Sharks met with Parramatta centre Brett Delaney and will hold talks with Queensland veteran Josh Hannay over the weekend.
