I'm convinced that for Parramatta to have any chance of winning the comp this year we need Big Ben back in the centres. Just goes to show that defending tries is just as important as scoring them. With the poor error rate, it would not have mattered who we played today, but what I am convinced of, is that we only have 2 genuine defensive centres in the club. Jarryd Hayne and Ben Smith. The rest can wait for the ball on the wing.

some of those tackle attempts today made me realise how lucky we are as a club to have a guy like Ben Smith at the club.

My backline at full Strength would be

Burt
Inu
B Smith
Hayne
Grothe

For now, Reddy can keep his spot on the wing.

The tries scored down grothes side.....tries like that were also scored when ben smith was there last year.

In anycase, i dont think the centres or defending of the outside backs was really the problem today, and having ben smith in the side defending inside grother wouldnt have made us a more threatening or better side today.

In all fairness Ben Smith has lapses in defence as well at times.
for sure .... but ppl seem to love to go to town on Ben yet overlook the inadequancies of others cos others have some fancy moves they put on at times

Your probaly right in saying the outside backs wouldn't have made a difference today.
I just know that our forward pack will improve immensly over the coming weeks with the inclusion of Hindy and Robbo, but am more concerned about our halfback situation and defence out wide. I think we'll need to tweak the side by reshuffling a few players in the backs and slotting in Big Benny. We'll definitely be in better shape for it

it's always challenging to have 350 to 400K + Marquee player sitting on the side lines ask any team.

Thats true and Im not in any way putting his ability down but again our forwards rely too much on Hindy.

the sharks would rely just as heavy on Gallan, the Storm = Hoffman, the eagles = Watmough, Souths = Kidwell, Penrith = Puletua....actually forget about the last one....

You reckon ? I personally think Parra are a bit of a one band band in the forwards, moreso than the teams you mentioned and have been for a few years.
I said pre season we really need another dominating presence in the pack instead a bunch of players who whilst good are not 'dangerous'

True, very true take Thurston out of the Cowboys line up the last two weeks and they take a bigger beating than the Stock Market ATM.

and the other danger is as soon as he comes back they will all think "she'll be right this week, hindy's back"

After what Hindy did last week, I wouldnt blame some of the less in touch people for thinking that. Hindmarsh just needs to be on the field and the whole team lifts.

I cant get over the first sentence of the first post in this thread "I'm convinced that for Parramatta to have any chance of winning the comp this year we need Big Ben back in the centres"

That just sounds funny to me.

Parra need a lot of things to be right if they are to win the comp, this is just one of them.
Centre is the most important defensive position in my mind. Its the hardest postion to read the play, and it's the position where most tries are leaked.

I've always been a fan of Ben Smith and im glad we resigned him, As soon as he is fit he should be back in the centres.
