Coach Michael Maguire has called on Ben Te’o to lead the club’s next generation of stars as the back-rower contemplates a move away from the Rabbitohs.

Fairfax Media revealed this week Te’o is effectively a free agent despite having a year to run on his contract. The Queensland representative signed a three-year deal when he switched to South Sydney at the end of the 2012 season but has an option in his favour to decide if he would fulfil the final year of his contract.

A move back to Brisbane could eventuate for Te’o who spent four seasons at the Broncos. With Sam Burgess moving on at the end of the year, Te’o’s signature remains a priority for South Sydney. The club have sounded out Cronulla fill-in captain Wade Graham about a possible switch.

While Te’o may have been relegated to the bench recently because of defensive deficiencies, Maguire said he was an important player at the club.

“Benny is a massive fabric of us now at Souths,” Maguire said. “We are very honest about talking about everything that’s going on. Hopefully Benny is here to stay and we want that too. He is a big part of what we’ve created and doing moving forward.

“We just have to work through that negotiation period. Ben’s role has already increased. It increases all the time. he is a senior player and has a lot of knowledge of what we are trying to create here. It’s about evolving as a team and when one opportunity opens up Ben is a type of player that wants to take that on. He is showing great leadership.”

Te’o has already been given a leadership opportunity when he was handed the captaincy of South Sydney’s Auckland Nines side which also included regular skipper John Sutton.

Maguire said he wanted Te'o to help lead the young brigade of South Sydney players including Alex Johnston, Cameron McInnes and Aaron Gray. “Bringing those young kids through is really exciting,” Maguire said. “To have players like Te’o stay on and help lead those players is going to assist us.”

While McInnes, a hooker, made his NRL debut last week, Maguire said 19-year-old Johnston is on the verge of first-grade selection after impressing in the pre-season.

Johnston, an outside back, once starred as a young Greg Inglis in the NRL’s 2009 season advertisement. “[He is] very very close,” Maguire said. “He is doing some great things at training and obviously in the games he is playing. When the opportunity arises I’m very comfortable to put him out there.”

South Sydney ended a three-game losing streak with a more polished performance against St George Illawarra on Saturday night. Maguire said they’ll need to play better when they play an in-form Penrith side on Friday night. “They are a very improved team,” Maguire said. “We have to make sure we are right on our game. They’ve made a lot of changes and it’s brought a lot of life to them. They are playing really enthusiastic rugby league.”

Rabbitohs eye Wade Graham, but Ben Te'o may go

South Sydney have identified Cronulla’s Wade Graham as a recruitment target as they seek to top up a pack that will lose the considerable punch of Sam Burgess and possibly State of Origin enforcer Ben Te’o next year.
The Rabbitohs have been quietly working away on plans to replace Burgess since it was announced in February he would be switching to English rugby after this season, and the England international’s importance to them was rammed home with a barnstorming individual performance in their win over St George Illawarra last Saturday.
It’s understood that Graham is one of several players Souths have expressed an interest in luring to Redfern and the off-contract back-rower is in the midst of making a decision on where his future lies.
The ex-Panther has already played 113 NRL games at the age of only 23 and is earmarked in the Shire as a future captain of Cronulla, hence the Sharks’ own desire to keep him. Cronulla offered Graham a three-year contract extension last month at a time when they were also still in negotiations with Kangaroos forward Andrew Fifita and emerging hooker Michael Lichaa.
Both those players would sign for Canterbury, only for Fifita’s $3.4million deal with the Bulldogs to come spectacularly unstuck. That development leaves the Sharks once again in talks to retain Fifita but Graham, who has now received an upgraded offer, remains a high priority in the face of rival interest led by Souths.
While Michael Maguire’s team is exploring avenues to fill the hole that will be left by Burgess, the competition heavyweights could also possibly be without Queensland Origin rep Te’o, who could walk away from the final year of his deal.

Te'o won't leave. Read what he says about Madge. Will become a Vice-Captain and Captain for games Sutto's off the field. Just wants to up his contract $$ now that he knows we have extra cash from Surgess leaving.

Why would we even touch Wade Graham with a 10 foot pole? What's the point of signing him with the risk of him copping it from ASADA.

Te'o is a great player to have in the team and we need to secure him long term.

Wade Graham would be a great addition in the back row when Burgess leaves. The ASADA stuff will amount to nothing for the players, the same as it did with Essendon.

Wade Graham is an absolute gun and would add some much needed brain and ball security in our forwards.
Plays with a similar aggression to Sam Burgess but doesn't drop the ball.

I really hope we sign him up.

It hasn't yet amounted to nothing for the Essendon players either.

Essendon has been punished by the AFL but ASADA hasn't come to a conclusion on any parties involved in Essendon or Cronulla.

Teo was interviewed after the game last night on MMMfm the impression I got he is looking for the $$$ so I think if he doesn't get what he wants he will go back to QLD.

Teo is a complete tool who hasn't been liked by his team mates at any of his clubs. There's a reason he moves when every contract is up.

Youre clearly just butthurt because your poor excuse of a club couldnt get him to play to his potential. Sit down.

Ben Te’o’s contract agreement with South Sydney has lapsed with the Queensland back-rower increasingly unlikely to remain at the club following the signing of Glenn Stewart on Tuesday.
Stewart will end his 12-year first-grade career with Manly at season’s end after the club were unable to make him an offer because of the salary cap. His move to South Sydney is expected to end Te’o's two-year stint at the club. Te’o is a free agent after he failed to take up an option to fulfil the third year in his contract next year. That option has now lapsed, and South Sydney have started preparing for life without him with the signing of Stewart. Te’o has been linked with a move back to Brisbane as well as French rugby.
While Manly are expected to announce the re-signing of outside backs Jorge Taufua and Peta Hiku to multi-year deals they could be dealt a double blow with regular Stewart fill-in Jamie Buhrer also weighing up his options. The one-time NSW representative has indicated he wants to remain at the club, but the Sea Eagles are struggling to rejig their salary cap despite Stewart’s departure. Cronulla and Parramatta are possible destinations for Buhrer.

Glenn and brother Brett had planned to play out their careers alongside each other. Brett’s manager George Mimis said his player was contracted at Manly until the end of 2016.
“It would have been ideal for Brett and Glenn to have finished their careers in the maroon and white,” Mimis said. “But clearly that’s not the case, so it’s on with business.”
South Sydney, who beat St George Illawarra and Canberra for Stewart’s services, have already lost Sam Burgess to English rugby from next season. Te’o headlines a host of Rabbitohs uncontracted for next season. Outside-backs Nathan Merritt, Beau Champion and Lote Tuqiri are off-contract as is forward Joe Picker. The Rabbitohs could now shift their recruitment to an add outside-back, although they have the exciting Alex Johnston contracted for next year.
Stewart’s inclusion at lock is expected to force John Sutton to an edge back-row spot, with Luke Keary combining with Adam Reynolds in the halves. Stewart, Sutton and Chris McQueen will make up a representative back-row for South Sydney next season.
Reynolds, who will benefit the most from Stewart's ball-playing ability, said he was excited by the impending arrival.
“He has done a lot in the game,” Reynolds said. “It’s going to be great to have him here. As good as it’s going to be playing with him next year, it’s going to be a challenge playing against him.
“He is a great competitor. Their team really competes on every play. They are a tough team to play against. He has that toughness in him. It’s something we’d love to have at our club, he brings that ball-playing ability that he has. It’ll add a new dimension to our club. I don’t know what their salary cap [situation is] but, at the end of the day, it’s a business and he had to do what he had to do.”
Manly co-captain Jason King was left “disappointed” by the move. “He has been a crucial member of our team and integral to a lot of success we’ve had over the years," he said.
“Not only that but he is a really good team member and teammate. He has done everything for the club. It’s very disappointing to see him go.
“Souths are getting a very good footballer.”

New Zealand Warriors up the ante in chase for Ben Te'o

League News
Date April 25, 2014 - 12:36AM
Adrian Proszenko

Chief Rugby League Reporter

Ben Te'o is almost certain to leave South Sydney after the Warriors joined the French rugby clubs chasing his services with an offer worth $650,000 a season.

Te'o is officially a free agent after he declined to take up an option in his contract for a third year at the Rabbitohs next year. The Queensland Origin forward has told teammates he won't be staying and that he is likely to sign with a French rugby club.
However, the Warriors' offer could be a wildcard after the Broncos – the team Te'o faces at Suncorp Stadium on Anzac Day – all but ruled out a return.
Asked if he was keen on luring Te'o back to the Broncos, coach Anthony Griffin said: "If he's available. He's going to play rugby union isn't he?
"I don't know if we'd be able to afford [him] compared to what they're offering in rugby. That's why they're going there isn't it?
"He does have all the tools. He's progressed very well, he's playing Origin now and is doing a very good job for them. He is a quality player and someone we will have to keep an eye on."
Souths have already made contingency plans, signing Manly back-rower Glenn Stewart. The Rabbitohs have also secured Penrith prop Tim Grant as a replacement for rugby-bound Sam Burgess.
However, another concern is the future of Chris McQueen. While McQueen is contracted to the Bunnies until the end of 2015, it is understood he is unhappy with his $165,000 deal, considered ''unders'' for a player involved in all three State of Origin matches for the Maroons last year.
The Rabbitohs have also been linked with Melbourne's Mitch Garbutt and North Queensland's Tariq Sims, although the latter would require a release from the Cowboys before exploring his options.
While the Warriors are throwing huge money at Te'o, this wasn't always the case. Born in Auckland, Te'o was in the Warriors system, but was sacked by the club when he was injured. Rather than pay him the $3000 scholarship money he was owed, the club offered him only a Puma training kit as severance pay.
"I was on a little contract, and that was meant to be my gas money," Te'o told Fairfax Media in 2007.
"All that travelling had been tough for my family and they turned around and said, 'we can't give you your money now, how about some Puma gear?' I just had to take it and try to sell some of it.
"I just made it part of my determination to try to make it, what happened with the Warriors. It's not easy, and where I have come from, I know I have to work hard for it. They didn't do me any favours."
Recruiting Te'o will cost more than it would to have retained him. After parting ways with the Warriors, the 27-year-old has established himself as one of the game's best back-rowers during stints with the Tigers, Broncos and Rabbitohs. After representing Samoa in 2008 he has been involved in the past two Origin series.
While the Warriors' offer is a lucrative one, he can earn more money still if he shifts to the 15-man code in France.
Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah declined to comment.
"He's one of the best players in the game and we have to contain him," Griffin said of Te'o on the eve of the Souths-Broncos clash.
"He's a great player, Ben. He's got a great carry in him with the ball, he runs a great line on the edge, he's a strong defender, so he fits the mix of their team really well."

Ben won't want to get hurt before signing another deal.

Also, I would have thought he'd stay after the club stood solid behind him last year with that alleged bashing case.

But, when all is said and done, the option was there, and SSFC have moved on.
