Bennett's snubbing of McGregor

Just for some perspective, the first year records of a selection of coaches were;

Des Hasler 9-15 (2004)
Craig Bellamy 16-10 (2003)
Mick Potter 7-17 (2013)
Nathan Brown 11-13 (2003)
Jason Taylor 12-13 (2007-first full year)
Mary McGregor 10-11 so far...kind of fits with the others.

...I see absolutely no trend there to suggest Mary is a good or bad coach...

Look it's plain to see that McGreggor is not comfortable adjusting his game plan each week. So once the good coaches work out his defensive plan, they counter it with a style that sees our team short out wide and if we adjust they come back inside.

We will be lucky to make the 8 now and although our forwards will be looking much better for 2016, our lack of speed in the backline will cause us a problem again next year.

Hate to disagree Possum but I don't see next year being "much" better. Yes we will have a couple of extra forwards, who will be good solid additions but will be losing our best forward who is a SOO player. That balances the scale back to even with no great improvement. We will still be lacking speed and penetration in the backs.

The coach showed on Friday he does not have the skills necessary to make us a top 4 side. His tactical selections in picking players out of position were instrumental in the result. Toovey should be approached unless we want to stay in limbo for another 3 years

The Blues have wrestled with scrum base woes for years now.

Daley should take a leaf out of Mary's Book of Coaching and consider playing Klemmer at half.

Gotta agree. Unless we pull in an assistant coach with good tactial nouse and knowledge of modern day football structures and training methods (in terms of absolutely drilling those structures into players) we cant be expected to be a proper competitor. We need this to complement Mary's coaching style.

Nope, it's that without facts an argument is pure speculation. And I'm yet to see any facts linking MacGregor's stint as S&C coach to a horror injury toll. End of story.
You seem to want to shut down the discussion Nick.

Let's see if we can get to "end of story" with two questions...

Question 1: Was there an increase in injuries during McGregor's stint as strength and conditioning coach?

Question 2: Was there a decrease in injuries following McGregor's departure from his role as strength and conditioning coach?

End of story?

Our backline just looks clunky, pure and simple. Watching other sides in the comp, particularly the top sides, they just nail those backline movements every time, with everyone running the right lines, passes hitting the man. We just seems to struggle to do that.

Having slow wingers who can't finish, and a fullback who has a weak passing game doesn't help, but the side just doesn't look particularly well drilled. The reason why other sides nail those plays is repetition, repetition, passing, catching, doing all the basics right.

Our greatest addition for next year is someone in the coaching staff that can improve this. Getting new forwards won't help us unless this improves.

Was there?

2007 was a horror year for injuries. 2008 was ok from memory. That's a significant improvement right there.

Regardless, MacGregor's tenure as S&C coach at the time is hardly proof he was to blame.

An interesting stat; in the US between 2002 and 2005 as the per capita consumption of sour cream increased so did motorcycle deaths at the exact same rate. Does that mean by eating more sour cream you are directly causing people to die in motorcycle accidents?

Correlation does not imply causation.

I'm yet to see anyone offer any reason he was to blame other than he was there. Something like "MacGregor's programs in the gym favoured superior quad development and inferior hamstring development, leading an increase in hamstring injuries to the squad.

At the same time MacGregor was S&C coach we were also sponsored by ADIDAS. It's just as plausible to suggest that maybe this contributed to our injury run as the ADIDAS footy boots offered less stability and contributed to ACL and hamstring injuries?

Well don't know about all of those stats but the fact is September Contenders have really stepped up this weekend, what our coach have as plan remains to be seen, but the Frday effort Versus the Broncos was one of the worst game plans in Years!

The stats are taken from the Rugby League Project.

I'd say you're right there. But it also suggests that the "best" coaches that Mary's often compared against weren't necessarily that good at the start of their coaching careers (except for Bellamy). And some of the others who were thrown up as better candidates than him originally weren't actually any better, at least statistically.

That said, DeBelin at halfback and Green on the wing were ridiculous choices.

I can understand De Belin at half to defend your way to a win or to lose by a small amount but copping 32 pts was pretty ordinary and really stuffed up the +/- in the end with a minus 26. at 12-0 down he should have thrown in Hutchison. I think Mary underestimated the Dragons as they were making heaps of ground and were in the Bronco's 20 a lot more often than he probably thought they would be in the fist half.

At least Mary tried something and in this case it did not work. Your damned if you do and damned if you don't. He will learn from this.

So when Bennett puts a back rower in the centres or Hasler puts Tony Williams in the halves it's a stroke of genius but when Mary does it it is poor coaching. Pretty sure I read a few posts asking for De Belin to start in the halves as it worked against the Warriors. So he took the punt and it did not work. Now move on to the next game.

Season is not over yet. Mary could still disappoint a few and make the top 8. One thing for sure we won't be fighting for a spoon as some assumed they would do under Mary's coaching.

We were in contention for the 8 around the August period last year too, when McGregor's coaching was woefully exposed in a few key games and we fell away. The good teams (and coaches) are really cracking the whip at this time and the signs were certainly there on Friday night that we are potentially in trouble
