Berrigan at the casino

It was reported on channel 10 last night that Shaun Berrigan was involved in an incident where he urinated on the floor in the casino.

Looks like it may be another unsubstantiated media story however as neither Berrigan or the casino seemed to know anything about it.

The QRL last night denied a cover-up amid allegations that Maroons squad member Shaun Berrigan had acted improperly and was kicked out of Brisbane's Treasury Casino on Sunday night.

QRL and Brisbane Broncos officials investigated yesterday with neither organisations taking any action against the 25-year-old utility back who made his international debut last month in the Anzac Test against New Zealand.

Brisbane's Channel 10 news last night alleged Berrigan had urinated on the floor of the casino.

Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen said he had questioned the player and was satisfied with his denial. He suggested Berrigan would consider his legal position.

"I telephoned Shaun Berrigan and asked him if he had committed the alleged offence and he flatly denied it," Cullen said.

QRL officials sent Sydney Roosters winger Chris Walker home in disgrace on Monday after breaking a Maroons' squad camp curfew in Brisbane and allegedly being involved in a drunken brawl.

Police used capsicum spray on Walker. He has been charged with assaulting police, obstructing police and being a public nuisance which he will defend on May 18.

Walker will not be considered for the opening match of the Origin series and he was fined $20,000 by the Roosters and placed on a season-long alcohol ban.

It would also appear that the reports of Chris Walker was still on around $50K to $100K this season due to the salary cap were also false as his 10% fine equates to $20K.

Well, either the 10% is wrong and they've charged him more or the $20,000 is incorrect. I can't see them fining him $20,000. Anyway, let's speculate and bullshit anyway DJ. After all every thing that is reported is true hey?

And who reported that figure??

The papers have said he is on around $150k.... the club said last year when he was signed that he would earn approx $40k in 2003 and that would increase in 2004 and again in 2005.

The only people quoting him to be on $50k this season are the usual suspects on forums.

Channel 10 went off a little early on this one, and the fact that they haven't reported on it since shows that they might have realised they'll be in strife if they pursued it.

Here's a Press Release:

----------------

Broncos Press Release:

The Brisbane Broncos have taken the following steps in relation to media reports today that a player from the club was involved in an incident at Conrad Treasury Casino on Sunday evening:

• telephoned the player accused and asked him directly had he committed the alleged offence. He flatly denied he had
• telephoned the Conrad Treasury Casino and a female representative advised the club that
a) it is not their policy to comment on the behavior of any individual patron and
b) they do not have a complaint against any Broncos player or official

• telephoned the Queensland Rugby League who also advised that they had not received a complaint from any quarter with regard to any Broncos player or official.

Taking into account the above, Broncos Managing Director Bruno Cullen has advised that the Broncos do not intend to take action with what the club regards as media speculation and unsubstantiated hearsay.

------------------

The QRL, ARL and Brisbane heard nothing of the claims until they saw the report. Which was day's after the alleged incident.

If you were caught doing such a thing at a Casino, you would have security on you before you were finished and straight to the authorities.

It was interesting that Ten News was the only media outlet to push the story until late in the day.

I must say, I was pretty worried when I first heard the headline, and intended to remove Berro from my avatar in discrace. However, the story Ten News put forward proved to have too many holes in it as the day progressed, consequently they haven't pushed further with it since.

I was very concerned at first, until I realised that it was more than likely to be just more gossip about our game from Channel 10 which has become a regular occurance on their behalf over the past couple of months.

Cheers.

The unfortunate thing about these situations is that the initial mud sticks, regardless of whether it's later proven not to have occurred or not, and it seems that nobody in the media is accountable for it. If it is proven not to have occurred, it'll fizzle out with no apology. Those anti-leaguies who simply read the headline in the first place will continue to believe it happened and use it as ammunition to feed their opinion of rugby league and continue to shoot the game down.

the media is so f**ked theyll say anything that sounds good

"The Living End - Headlines"

"I read all the papers
What did I see?
Page to page corruption
Thank god it's not me

Headlines, deadlines, photographs
It's all bullocks to me
A family's future on the line
As long as they get a story

They won't tell you anything
There're not even wondering
What went on in town today
Headlines mean they get their pay

Red light district, Saturday night
Cops are late for another fight
One man's mess, another's glory
Another crime, just another story"
