This idea that Bennett ruins clubs is laughable.

It's a throwaway line that the board members of the Illawarra Steelers, Newcastle and Brisbane throw out to the media to deflect focus away from their own incompetence, and any fan of those clubs that buy it is a moron.
When you know people that worked at St George and especially Newcastle, you won't get too many good stories about him. Its no myth. Well ok there was 1 person that he impressed at Newcastle.

Storm and Panthers are lucky a useful not over the hill coach didn’t inherit this team 3 years ago when they were on the up and up. A modern coach that could put some discipline into this origin spine might have been a genuine contender these last two seasons instead of well gee thanks guys, really swell effort there, bad luck hey 👍🏻

Both are great coaches. For me the better one of the two is Gibson if you look at his record he would only stay at a club for 3 seasons then move on. Bennett was at the Broncos For 20 odd years when they were clearly over the salary cap for most of their latter premierships. He also coached most of his time with the cap that evened out the comp.

Gibson took over Easts in 1967 and coached them from a winless season in 1966 to the semis in both seasons he was there, 1967 and 68.

He then moved to St.George for the 1970-71 seasons. Coming 3rd in 1970 and taking Saints to their first GF in 5yrs in 1971. They also were runners up in 1970 and winners in 1971 of the Pre Season Cup.

In 1973 he went to battlers Newtown for a season and got them to the Final losing to Cronulla. On the way they knocked out the mighty St.George in a semi replay. The Jets won the Pre Season Cup.

He returned to the club he played for in 1974, winning the premiership back to back with the Roosters in 1974 and 75 and being semi finalists in 1976. Won the Pre Season Cup in 1974 and the Amco Cup in 1975.

In 1978 he was moved to Souths who had gone bust in 1975 and were wooden spooners then 10th and 11th in following seasons. Gibson arrival saw them win the Pre Season Cup against Canterbury and he had them in the semi final race until the penultimate round of the competition ending at 7th place. 1979 was his worst season with the Rabbitohs finishing 9th.

In 1981 he was at Parramatta winning the Premiership in each of his 3 seasons. RU in Pre Season Cup in 1981.

His final club was Cronulla where he bought through a host of local talent that would go on to win the clubs first minor premiership in 1988. Gibson's first season at the Sharks was derailed when Steve Rogers missed most of the year after his jaw was broken in the first game. Were Runners Up in the Panasonic Cup in 1985.
