Pete - 97 doesn't count. It wasnt a win so much as a script.

We compare sucess in the same comp.

And just because my maths is sh*t.......

Musby - I couldn't fin interstate rep lists for 74 and 75. On the internationals count though, Jack is still in front.

Jack also shone in a 12 team comp. Bennet in 16 - meaning the spread of internationals should have been greater, but Brisbane got more instead of less.

There isn't much between the two but that comment could go either way. Jack only had to beat 11 other teams, Wayne had to beat 15.

So you're just going to pick and choose to suit your argument?

You do realise Brisbane weren't even favourites heading into that year right?

Again it's a flawed assessment.

Is there any player who has played under both Gibson and Bennett at a first grade level? Their response to the question would be interesting.

The common denominator with Gibson and Bennett is Ron Massey - maybe it is him?

Actually, I think you'll find the real Common Denominator and possibly the greatest Coach in history, was Vince Lombardi. I don't know if Gibson had a single original idea in his life and Bennett certainly pays recognition to the Master Coach.

To be very honest, alot of sports coaches around the world look into Vince Lombardi's work but not all can implement it aswell as others. Sir Alex Fergusson is also a good one to work off.

Jack mainly got the use of statistics from Vince, some training sessions too,

not first grade level, but someone must have played under Jack at SOO, and Wayne at first grade or international level. Laurie Daley?

OVERALL SUCESS RATE:
Bennett 63.8%, Gibson 62.3%

Bennets best stats are 69.8% with Saints. Jack had 69.7% with Easts, and over 70% with Parra. Of course, Jack coached Souffs and Cronulla, but note that Jack won 61.5% of all games, and the clubs only club championship, at Newtown.

REP PLAYERS IN PREMIERSHIP YEARS

GIBSON:
Easts 1974: TEST REPS: 3 current, 3 former = 6
Easts 1975: TEST REPS: 8 current, 3 former = 11
Parra 1981: TEST REPS: 3 current, 3 former. ORIGIN REPS: 2 current, 1 former = 9
Parra 1982: TEST REPS: 8 current, 2 former. ORIGIN REPS: 2 former = 12
PARRA 1983: TEST REPS: 4 current, 4 former. ORIGIN REPS: 4 current, 1 former = 13

AVERAGE: 5.1

BENNETT
Brisbane 1992: TEST REPS: 7 current, 3 former. ORIGIN REPS: 2 current, 2 former = 14
BRISBANE 1993: TEST REPS: 6 current, 3 former. ORIGIN REPS: 4 curent, 2 former = 15
BRISBANE 1998: TEST REPS: 9 current, 1 former. ORIGIN REPS: 3 current, 1 former = 14
BRISBANE 2001: TEST REPS: 6 current, 6 former. ORIGIN REPS: 1 former - 13
BRISBANE 2006: TEST REPS: 8 current, 4 former. ORIGIN REPS: 1 current, 3 former = 16
ST ILLAWARRA 2010: TEST REPS: 7 current, 4 former. ORIGIN REPS: 2 current = 13

AVERAGE = 14.1

Jack won his comps with almost ONE THIRD of the rep talent that Bennet had.

Jack sh*ts it in!

One glaring omission that you're making is the length of the season, average win ratios are meaningless in comparison to shorter seasons. Injury and fatigue play a much bigger part.

Also you've failed to compare rep players prior to being coached by either coach. You're assuming that having a great coach has no impact on your ability to be a rep player. You're also comparing two rep era's which consisted of completely different international levels of competition, and an era that didn't have the abundance of NZ players that we do now.

It's impossible to compare the coaches, the game is completely different now to what it was even 10 years ago, let alone 30 years ago. Every stat you're comparing is profoundly impacted by another factor which is completely different in this day and age.

Stats looked at on their own are just numbers without meaning. At least the numbers look fancy if you don't compare context.

Too very different coaches so hard to split them. Fair to say that as co-coaches they may have been unstoppable. They are also very unassuming in nature and on face value you could never have imagined them as being great coaches.

The one key skill they share that has driven their success is their ability to get into players heads,

Chris Johns would have played under both Bennett at the Broncos and Gibson for NSW

Daley and Ferguson would have played with Bennett at the Raiders and Gibson for NSW

Terry Matterson may also have had one game under Gibson for NSW...

Bennett has coached teams with every conceivable advantage. The Broncs had the money, flexible salary caps and the talent to win plenty. He has never built a team with fewer resources than other teams.

Gibson coached clubs at different stages of development and wasn't afraid to coach sides with fewer resources.

Bennett is like a fighter who has carefully chosen opponents he knows he could beat to pad his record. Gibson had a go.

Gibson wins

FFS they played less than half the regular comp! If Gibson took the Roosters to win the 1976 Group 3 reserve grade title that wouldn't have counted either.

The only way Brisbane wouldnt have been favorites in 1977 is by people betting on the ARL. Brisbane stacked it's team, and Bennett coached the referees. Their main sponsor and club owner funded the comp. Their CEO ran it. The GF was at their home ground. And you reckon that was fair?

And Fiery, you do realised that the entire Pommy test pack and halfback were playing in the comp when Gibbo was at Newtown? Reilly and Lowe at Manly, Watson and Bishop at Cronulla, Ashurst and Stevenson at Penrith, Lockwood at Balmain.......
