I am trying to find out who most people think is the best QB in football. I know alot of people are fans of a certain team, but I am asking for who is the best, not your favourite. Consider it this way, you are an owner of a football team and you can have any QB in the NFL running your offence.... Who do you want?

well im a pack fan and would rate Brett Favre as the best ever 8) but if i were starting a new team I would have to pick...Peyton Manning (dam i hate him though lol) or Donovan Mcnabb.

Both are currently on the younger side of the Qb tables and both are great players, although Peyton is the more conventional QB Mcnabb offers the scrambling and the abilty to take his team deep into the playoffs.

I would never even consider Mike Vick..his done nothing and yet people carry on like his the jesus of the NFL.

The old age question that brings debate like no other topic in the NFL except perhaps for who is better: Barry Sanders or Emmit Smith ? NO, I am not going there polluting this thread.

A mate of mine from the USA will quote the following when discussing QB's:

"The scrambling QB will dominate the ESPN highlight reel, pocket passers dominate playoff time"

The above has rang true for over decade just about in my books where only perhaps Steve Young could of fit the 'scrambling QB' mould. I won't put the agin Elway in that list when the Bronco's went back to back on the back or Terrell Davis.

If I am a new owner in the league, I narrow it down to 2 guys: Peyton Manning & Tom Brady. Favre is nearing the end of his career so he was not considered, McNair was a possible option whilst McNabb, Culpepper and Vick were looked at as dual threats though I am more of a drop back QB kinda-guy. A sleeper is Chad Pennington who is young, accurate and a born leader. But I can't have them all.

Let's start with Manning.

Many experts claim he is the hardest working QB when it comes to studying game film of the opposition and as a pure passer, he ranks with Dan Marino. The knock on Manning thus far (apart from up until recently to win a playoff game) is he has not taken this team to the SuperBowl. I find it hard to blame the guy soley, he has not had a defence capable of backing up the talent on the offensive side of the ball.

Stats

Tom Brady is the NFL's nice guy who has happened to win 2 of the last 3 Super Bowls along with the SB MVP award on both occasions. Pretty fair effort for a guy who was drafted late in 2000 draft from memory who was riding the bench behind Drew Bledsoe. He reminds some of Joe Montana with ability to keep cool under pressure and win football games. I am not certain of his winning % but it has to rank higher than any QB starting in the league today. As of the minute, he is 17-0 on track to break a record which from memory is 18 straight wins.

Stats

50G - 48GS - 1608Att - 996Com - 61.9% - 10787yds- 74TD - 41Int - 86.4QBR

After alot of deliberation, I am taking / voting for Tom Brady. Who can argue with 2 SB rings after only 5 seasons in the NFL ? The offensive guys around him he makes better which is a sign of a great player and whilst he will not be one to cop plenty of hype come the regular season, Tom Brady behind centre is the best there is the business.

I voted for Manning. Throws a tight spiral and calls audibles all day. If I were blocking for this guy it would be a dream. He looks over the defence and calls the blitzes, goes up to his line and says "block the linebacker". He also works very hard with his WR's. Have you seen the process he and Harrisson go through every practice, its uncanny.

Here is my prediction, Manning will win a superbowl in the next 3 years.

Vick without a doubt...

To put it simply - he is the best athlete currently playing the game.

We are not looking for the 'best athlete' in the NFL, we are looking for the best QB in the NFL.

As for "bets athlete", you will get a great argument that the like of: Randy Moss, Ray Lewis, Brian Urlacher, Terrell Owens etc. are better athletes. I would put Moss ahead of Vick just quietly. He is sub 11.00secs in the 100m, can jump higher than any WR /CB in this league and makes plays attracting more defenders in the league.

Vick the athlete is unquestioned though, Vick the QB still has a lot of unasnwered questions which in time he will answer. He needs to improve his accuracy, patience in the pocket and more importantly learn when too and not gamble.

I will give you all a tip: Vick will just be another multi-threat QB ala Randall Cunnigham if he continues to want to believe he is the second coming of you know who as he will get banged up like last season if he wants to dare cross the middle with today's LB's. I hope I am wrong.

The question in the original post asks who would you want to have as a QB running your offence....

This is opinion only, but my answer is Vick.

He may not have the accuracy in passing as some of the others mentioned, but he still seems pretty handy and has a strong arm.

Rushing though, Vick is in a different league to Cunningham or any other QB I have seen...

He brings a dimension to an offence that no other team in the league can duplicate.

A lot of American media have rated him the best athlete in football, and ESPN rated him the second best American athlete of any sport ( behind Lance Armstrong...)

Randy Moss is also talented no doubt, but from what I have seen he seems to lack a few shall we say "intangible" qualities (ala Chris Walker), and I have seem him blow up at his team mates on more than a few occasions...

I dunno about everyone here but i think Vick has yet to prove himself..he has only played a season and a bit..and spent almost the entir time on the bench last season.

Vick cant read the defense like manning, Vick doesnt look for the pass he looks for the run...Why is mcnabb so good? well cause unlike vick he only runs when he has to..and for an NFL owner having a QB run downfield and get smacked isnt good.

Mcnabb will always look to pass..and will only run when the pocket is just about dead..thats how he has always been, if vick were the same he would be more dangerous seeing as how you can get more yards in the air then you can running...have you ever noticed why teams always say "we have to keep vick in the pocket" basically means they want him to throw the ball..lol

A few years ago I would have voted Favre, but now I think it's Manning. I don't think Brady would be as good as he is on a lesser team.

I am partial to traditional pocket passers, but Vick, Mcnabb, and Culpepper are very good. Maybe Vick will revolutionize the position if he stay healthy. It reminds me of hockey defenseman Bobby Orr, who came along in the late 60s/early 70s, at a time when defensemen stayed back, played defense, and never caried the puck. Orr, a better skater and stickhandler than any forward, introduced a whole new way of playing, and others came along who followed his lead. Maybe Vick can do the same for running quarterbacks. (Apologies to those who can't follow my analogy due to lack of hockey knowledge.)

Brady on a lesser team would not be as good ? Offensive wise, he has made the like of Troy Brown, Deion Branch, Givens etc house hold names and until recently was handing off to Buffalo reject Antwoine(sp) Smith at RB. Yes, Dillon was always going to bounce back in this offense as he is a great back riddled with injury lasy season, but I think your taking away some credit that should be afforded to Brady.

Yes, the defence is brilliant, another bunch of blue collar players who as a unit are as good as any in pro football. Putt Manning behind center, he has the same results as Brady. I don't question that.

Manning offensively for years has had a better supporting cast and with Reggie Wayne now emerging drawing coverage from Harrison, they are going to be better than last season as Edge looks like the MU backI remember !

This "I don't think Brady would be as good as he is on a lesser team could be said for Manning as well, hell, it could be said for any successful QB. The measure of greatness apart from winning SB's is improving the game of those around you at QB turning them into contenders.

Excellent post, however I have to disagree about John. Who can forget the human helicopter in SB 32. It kept the drive alive and led to a TD. It's fair to say that later in his career that he scrambled less, mainly because he didn't have to.

Id have to say Favre, though being a pack fan im quite biased.... I just think if he had a decent defense to go along with him and ahman green, the pack would be unstoppable.... Favre has been so good over so many seasons, and at an age where most qbs are washed up or playing backups behind someone younger, favre is still piling up the passing yards and doesent show any sign of letting up.

The guys a champ... you can have your Mannings, your Vicks if i had to choose one person to stand behind centre it would be Brett without question, cause the guys got the runs on the board, so to speak.

Manning for me, how anyone could consider Vick the best QB in football astounds me, maybe the fastest running QB in football, but overall Id have him about #10 on the list of best QB's currently going around, if not lower.

Manning easily. He has the best football brain followed by Tom Brady IMHO. Best ever was Elway without question. He had the ability scramble, the brains and the arm. Manning has the brains and the arm but can't run.

Favre as good as he is is prone to the odd brain explosion at the worst possible time.

I hate to generalise but I can only take it by your brilliant and incisive reply with a rolling eyed face that you are merely one of these ESPN high lights junkies who considers a few fancy plays enough to make someone considered a top quality QB. Vick is not in the same league as the top 5 or 6 quarterbacks, and I dont care how fast he can run.
