Online Auction - Bid for Blake Ferguson hat trick jersey
June 23, 2009

Young Sharks winger Blake Ferguson doesn’t have to go all that far back to remember the last time he crossed for a hat-trick of tries

The first try was a piece of brilliance, the second a winger doing his job on the end of a well-worked move, while the third gave Sharks fans a glimpse of the speed of Blake Ferguson, their newest backline hero.

With two tries in 11 appearances in the top grade prior to the Broncos clash, there was nothing to indicate this would be his coming out ‘parade’, however just 80-minutes later and the Cronulla faithful are looking forward to more of the same for many years to come.

Ferguson was brilliant in being able to avoid the touchline and corner post when scoring the Sharks first four-pointer of the night.

His second try came after accepting a Anthony Tupou pass and then dashing 10-metres to score wide out, before his third, in which Ferguson found some space after a Broncos error and outpaced the defence in an 80-metre run to the line.

They were three tries which might not yet invoke memories of the likes of prolific point scorers such as Peachey, Mullane, Rogers and Corcoran, although it will certainly have long-time Sharks fans hoping.

Spreading his junior football days between Wellington in the west of NSW and the Earlwood Saints in the inner western suburbs of Sydney, Ferguson doesn’t have to go all that far back to remember the last time he scored three in one match.

“I think it was under 17’s, maybe under 18’s, playing for the Wellington Cowboys,” Ferguson said. Considering Ferguson only recently turned 19, its not all that long ago.

The ‘new breed’ at the Sharks, which includes Ferguson, Matt Wright and Nathan Stapleton, all three still in their teens, have earned praise for their performances of late, with their energy, enthusiasm and ability playing a big part in the Sharks recent resurgence.

However while the backline stars have been winning plenty of accolades, two other Sharks managed to get their name on the try scoring sheet for the first time this season in last Monday night’s match.

Prop Kade Snowden crossed for a try late in the game, crashing over after receiving a smart Corey Hughes pass, while Grant Millington was a standout on the night, running 30-metres to score in the first half, before notching a double in the early moments of the second stanza.

So scratch two more starters from the list for the post-season ‘nudie-run’ which is reserved for those players unable to join the try-scoring list, while at the same time expect more of the same from Ferguson in the weeks, months and years ahead.

A signed Blake Ferguson jersey, along with a sequence of photos of his spectacular effort in the first half, is being auctioned.

Don’t miss out on your opportunity to own a truly individual piece of memorabilia of this rising star of the Cronulla Sharks.
