Actually i was impressed with the ref of the italy vs nz match. There werent many penalties at all. There were a few in the aus vs argentina match though i think. I knew Australia would win that one but i was hoping Argentina would pull off an upset.

At the moment I am watching the Romania vs Ireland game and even though Romania are losing, I am admiring the way they are playing. For one of the minnow teams they are really testing the Irish. Ireland are winning 23-0 at halftime but Romania are dominating up front.

they almost scored another one. I hope they can put up some more points they aren't too bad a team. Better than the North Harbour team at the mo.

Great effort from Romania, no disgrace in that loss at all. Italy were outclassed, but their forwards were competitive & there is improvement from what theyve shown in the past.
There'll be a number of lopsided scores in the tournament, but it will be good experience for the minnow sides. Theyll have their moments in the sun, too.

All credit to the Romanians, they gave us a much tougher test than I expected. Still, I'm pleased to get out with the win and the bonus point.

I think the refereeing has been excellent so far. Hoeness did a great job in the first game and so did Kaplan in our game. Didn't even notice who reffed the AB game which speaks volumes.

Both League and Union's international comps are a farce IMO

Im both codes there are really only 5 contenders that are a chance at it, but the thing about it is for most teams its not about winning, Georgia wouldnt be expecting much more than to get out there and try their best

i saw something in the highlights that reminded me f this point, after the national anthem was sung, a player (not sure what nation) had a look around the stadium and smiled, it shows the joy of being there.... this was also evident in the League 7's, Russia score a try and although they got beaten you couldnt wipe the smile off hteir faces

Its not all about winning and losing, its about being there and experiecning it all.....

I don't think there are 5 contenders at the league world cup...2 maybe 3 some may argue only 1 but definately not 5, but your sentiments are pretty right. Even the soccer world cup experiences blow outs though. You see a few 5-0, 6-0 drubbings and even some games that are only won by 2 or 3 goals are clearly dominated by superior sides.

I agree completely with the experience thing though. Watching players singing their anthems with tears in their eyes and looking at all the people etc in awe is fantastic, it draws you to the game.

I wonder why FitzSimons remained quiet on the blowouts? I'm fairly sure he harped on about ones in the RLWC.

Thats only when their is a minnow involved.
If their was a blowout between England and Nz im sure they wouls criticise it.
If Australia beeat Russia 70-6 their would be no critisism.

All world cups deal with blow outs some sports are just targeted more than other i.e. Rugby League, due to the standing of the game as the break away code.

There are realy only 3 nations capable of winning the League world cup unfortunatley gone are thedays when the French were good.

AUS
GB
NZ

All these one sided games make me think the format should be changed. What was the idea the English had in their bid for the next WC? Something about 16 teams in the top tier and a parallel tournament for the lesser nations. They should re-visit that. Even 16 is stretching it, they should make it 8, with qualifying to get in.

I say this because I think the one sided games are boring, and the injury to Tana Umaga makes me think they should cut out the unnecessary games and get right to the meaningful ones.

I dont think changing the format will help as these teams need exposure to the top teams in the world. YOu are only going to get better by playing better teams. I heard the Canadian coach going on about the same thing. I agree with him, I think more needs to be done to bridge the gap between the different levels. Do this between each world cup and then the gauge will come at the world cup. By putting the lesser teams into one comp and the big teams in another comp doesnt help the development of those countries.
