Flash Back - Parramatta became the first Sydney Club to defeat a touring National team, when it walloped South Africa 39-18 at Cumberland Oval on Tuesday July 30, 1963.
No one can take that record away EVER..
The Sprinboks were bolstered by the inclusion of Graeme Wilson (an Australian international forward who played with Newtown, and is the father of Alan and Craig Wilson) and veteran hooker Fred Anderson (South Sydney) as well as a good player, Alan Skene (Souths) who was a centre.
I can't remember if Fred "Paunchy" Griffiths played full back. I can't find the match program, but I've got it here somewhere. I assume Paunchy didn't because he would have been the goal kicker for the visitors.
This match was played on the TUESDAY before the elimination semi-final which was played on the SCG the following Saturday. Imagine Clubs today risking their main players in a 'nothing' game just four days before a major final!!!.
I took half a day off work to travel from in town to Cumberland for the match..and, as usual I thoroughly enjoyed it...
Report from Daily Telegraph Wednesday July 31, 1963)
PARRAMATTA BRIGHT IN 39-18 RUNAWAY
Parramatta Rugby League team had a nine try scoring spree against South Africa in winning 39-18 at Cumberland Oval.
Lock Ron Lynch and winger Ken Foord each scored three tries.
Test fullback Ken Thornett, who played only the second half, and as a winger got two tries and hooker Bill Rayner one.
Parramatta used the match as a workout for its premiership sem-final against Balmain at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
Exhuberant
Players tried to make sure they escaped injury.
But the exhuberant South Africans took the match seriously and a couple of times caused Parramatta some concern with head high tackles.
Parramatta centre Derek Hallas suffered a black eye and half back Bobby Bugden was groggy for a while after a South Africans tackle thudded his head hard on the ground.
Winger Mike Jackson suffered a bruised toe and retired from the match at half time.
He will be fit to play in the semi final on Saturday.
Parramatta set out to make the game wide open and hooker Rayner enabled it to keep play that way by winning 23 0f the 30 scrums.
Parramatta had a 13-7 lead at half time.
A try South Africa scored in this session showed it had learned something in the art of backing up.
Six players figured in the raid which covered 70 yards.
They switched direction several times before winger Jan De Waal scored the try.
The try was the best of the tour.
Tries were scored at random in a carefree second half.
The match ended South Africas nine match itinerary in Australia.
It won the first two, and lost the remaining seven.
Co-Manager Mr Harold Kelley said, We learned a lot from the tour, but we realise we still have a lot more to learn in League technique.
The South Africans will fly to New Zealand this morning.
The tour of New Zealand had been in doubt because injuries had reduced South Africas strength to 17 players
South African born players Fred Griffiths (North Sydney) and Alan Skene (South Sydney) will accompany the team to New Zealand.
PARRAMATTA 39 ( Ron Lynch 3, Ken Foord 3, Ken Thornett2 Bill Rayner tries, Bob Bugden 4, Ron Willey 2 goals) defeated SOUTH AFRICA 18 (J De Waal 2, K Pelser, J Pieterse tries G Smit 3 goals)
Crowd 5372.
