Bill retires

He is gone. It's official. Wont be reffing on the Roo tour either.

So what if he made up his own rule interpretations, he was the only good and consistent referee in the game.

He must have realised that the NRL needs him more than he needs the NRL. Will be sad to see him go. All the best Billy.

Well said SS. The stadard of refereeing in the NRL just took another dive.

We can only hope that Bill decides to become referee's coach at some stage. Whatever happens, I for one wish him all the best. He has redefined the term 'professional referee'

Damned shame that. Bill was best of the bunch by far. Still, somebody always bobs up. Guess I felt the same when Col Pearce retired. Other gooduns IMO were Darcy Lawler, Keith Page, Laurie Bruyeres and Gary Cook. Only dicey one to rise to the top IMO was Greg Hartley. I don't think Mander and co. will make it to the top. They annoy too many fans, and if fans get too annoyed they'll just turn away from the game. And that's something the NRL just can't afford right now. Somebody will bob up.

 Not only dicey Pop, but an uncharacteristicly fast rise to the top as well. From refereeing reserve grade midway through 1978, to reffing the GF the same year. I guess it paid to be mates with Arko back in those days. ;-)
