The Pokies Tax Issue

It has to be said and make no mistake about it - Bob Carr's Poker Machine tax is aimed at two things - to fill up the labor party coffers and to destroy the sport of Rugby League in NSW.
The Club industry in NSW does alot of wonderful deeds for Rugby League at all levels ranging from junior clubs to the NRL clubs. The clubs also help out in the promotion of other sports and do alot of local communities via donations to hospitals and charities.
Carr's poker machine tax threatens to destroy 100's of junior clubs across the state, who rely on support from clubs and pubs to help with equipment, facilities, jerseys and most of all - insurance.
I'm involved with the St Clair JRLC as a coach and volunteer and I know the pokies tax will cause immense damage with our two major sponsors being the St Marys RSL Club and the Blue Cattle Dog Hotel. Both organisations will be hit hard with the tax with community sport being the first scapegoat.
Junior clubs in Penrith rely heavily on sponsorships from the local clubs and pubs. The council it seems from the dealings with facilities is very pro-AFL despite the Panthers being the pride and joy of the are and proving to be an economic boom for the area. So clubs in Penrith need sponsorships to help with facilities as the council aren't willing.
St Clair Comets is one of many local sporting clubs whether it be League, Soccer, Cricket or Netball that will be affected by this crazy tax. The Comets field anywhere from 38-42 Rugby League teams every season and they get by because of the generous support of St Marys RSL, the Blue Cattle Dog and endless fundraisers - ironically most of them at the Cattle Dog.
We can't lose the players from those 38-42 teams to other sports with low insurance or to non-active stuff like playstations, internet, television, etc. Sport and Rugby League could be a thing of the past with this pokies tax.
Rugby League more than most other sports has a very high insurance levy and that is often subsidided by sponsorships to ensure registrations is kept at a competitive price. With September 11 and the HIH collapse, insurance prices have gone through the roof, affecting all junior league clubs.
We, the Rugby League supporters, can't allow Carr to so easily and blatantly destroy our sport. It's blinding obvious what Carr is doing and we have to step up to the plate.
When the fires ravaged Sydney several times last year and this year, it was the clubs who were providing free shelter and free food for the fire fighters and those affected by the fires. The clubs did more than what the governments could ever dream of. That community spirit and goodwill will be lost as the clubs will be on their hands and knees just to survive, yet alone give out endless amounts of supplies to those in need or protecting our land.
Please get in touch with your local state MP and protest about the state tax, which will kill our sport and kill many local community projects.
