ewcastle Knights fullback Darius Boyd has been admitted to a mental health clinic in order to seek treatment for depression."We are ensuring Darius gets the best possible care and treatment at this time," CEO Matt Gidley said on Wednesday.
"Depression is a serious illness in our society and we are pleased Darius has taken the first step in his recovery by acknowledging he needs help.
"Football is secondary at this point, it is important Darius' focus is entirely on his treatment.”
There is no timeframe on Boyd's return to football.
Media are requested to respect Boyd's privacy at this time. The Club will provide any appropriate updates in consultation with Boyd.

Depression is becoming widely spread in our society and on the increase with the younger generation.... I wish Darius all the best to over come this..... I have a son who is still going through depression and was playing at top level sport in another code....and is struggling to get himself right.. So I wish you a quick recovery.......

its what i mentioned before about his introverted personality, hes never going to be comfortable in front of the media & he has been copping it deluxe re: wayne bennett & his loyalty under fire.

Atleast now the media/fans might back off for a while.

I wish him well and hope he gets the help he needs.

I thought he was one of our best in 2009-2011 and will never forget the way he ran the ball back at full pace! I haven't seen that from him since he left us...

f**k, people think that sportsmen and celebrities are just born naturally greedy, petulant and precious. Most of them grew up as ordinary people like you, but in this case, Darius grew up in less than ordinary circumstances than I'm sure the most of you, and in a bad way. So, the fact you know that celebrities regularly succumb to depression, should surely make you think that monetary reward is not the big key to a happy life. This ignorance is just an insult to the complexity of human nature.

I've met Darius before and can genuinely say he's a top bloke. He gets crucified because he doesn't like interviews but he's the type of person who is only interested in footy and none of the celebrity crap that comes with it.

I also feel for him because he's had an extremely difficult upbringing. He follows Wayne closely because he never had that father figure growing up.

I also rate him as highly as any star player in the game and would love to see him back when he's right.

All the best, Darbs.

Think of the pressure that a 600k contract brings particularly in a fishbowl town like Newcastle. Then throw in the injuries.

Coming from you, this actually makes a lot of sense.

Mate, you can have all the money in the world, resources, mates etc but when you go home ,it can be the loneliest place, which is a big problem to have in ones life.

Reality exists between these two extremes. The laws of relativity explain why a rich businessman can be driven to suicide, whilst a starving peasant can smile and grin and bear the card they've been dealt.

In saying that, a brief meeting with someone does qualify you to comment on their character (although I am guilty of questioning his character without meeting him:D), not to mention, plenty of orphaned children have avoided depression throughout their lives; my Mother an example.

It's really up to the individual and how their unique set of genetics co-exist with environmental factors. Boyd is no charity case, but he is also only human.

Hazz, depression has always been widely spread but not diagnosed. Research and understanding of the symptoms has helped diagnose the problems.
I speak from personal experience. Both my kids were diagnosed with depression and anxiety. My daughter has recovered and is a happy fulfilled person now. My son is still troubled by anxiety but is hopefully on the mend.
When I was a youngster, I had problems. I now realise and have been told by my GP that I probably had depression. That was 50 years ago, and depression as an illness was unknown.
And Dino, you need slapping.

I agree with everything you've said, but I will add that it's even more widely spread today because of the nature of the world we now live in. Social networking, mobile phones, gadgets, and the 24 hour watchful eye of society is driving a lot of people crazy. So much hatred and anger in the world, and people craving acceptance.
