Former Brisbane Bronco Brad Thorn has announced he will not be returning to the Crusaders for next year's Super 12 season.
Crusaders coach Robbie Deans has confirmed that Thorn has informed team officials that he wants to have a break after nine continuous seasons of professional sport.
Deans says he won't be playing league so there is still the possibility that he may come back to rugby, with the big lock not ruling out a return to the NPC next year.
Thorn switched codes this year to play for the Crusaders and Canterbury.
He was selected for the All Blacks tour of Ireland, Scotland and Argentina last month, but withdrew 12 hours after the team was named, after being undecided about his future in rugby.
Auckland's Brad Mika has been called into the Crusaders squad to fill the place left open for Thorn.

</td></tr></tbody></table>The National Rugby League and the Brisbane Broncos have reached agreement on salary-cap investigation procedures, with auditors granted access to the Broncos Leagues Club financial details. The agreement follows a meeting in Brisbane last week between NRL director of business and Legal Affairs David Gallop, NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert, Brisbane chief Shane Edwards and general manager of the Broncos Leagues club Michael Mercer. The meeting had been called after the NRL board issued the Broncos with a breach notice for failure to allow access to the Leagues Club's financial statements to complete 2000 season audits. After being informed of the requirements of the NRL's audit process, the Broncos Leagues Club agreed to assist, negating the need for the NRL to pursue a fine. "The NRL did not breach Brisbane in the belief that the club was breaking the cap," Gallop explained. "It was simply about us being able to conduct standard audits across all clubs. "It is important that all clubs are subject to the same investigative procedures and that is what the Broncos have also ultimately agreed." The NRL viewed today's confirmation that the Broncos would assist the salary cap auditor in his investigations as further evidence of the effectiveness of the salary cap and its importance in the game. Meanwhile, John Singleton tonight pulled his takeover bid for the Brisbane Broncos after News Corp made a better offer for the side. Singleton's Magic Millions League Pty Ltd conceded tonight the company could not gain control of the Broncos after the counter bid from News Corp, which already owns 44.9 per cent. </td></tr></tbody></table>

</td></tr></tbody></table>Champion halfback Allan Langer has declared he will live or die by his form if he makes a playing comeback with the Brisbane Broncos next season. The 35-year-old playmaker has resumed pre-season training with Brisbane following an approach from Broncos coach Wayne Bennett to help the club overcome a serious scrumbase dilemma. Current halves Scott Prince and Ben Ikin underwent major knee reconstruction surgery last season and are not due back until late in the 2002 season. As a result, Langer is set to take the biggest gamble of his 15 seasons, re-igniting his 270-game career against the advice of some who fear his body may not handle the week-to-week grind in the toughest rugby league competition in the world. "I won't get any favours from the Broncos, and I don't want any," said Langer when asked if his scrapbook would save him from some ordinary games early in his planned comeback. "If I make a decision to play, I have to be treated like any other player. "I have to play to to he best of my ability and do what I can for the team. If that is not good enough, then it's not worth being there." There's a feeling Bennett may "manage" Langer's comeback by allowing him to have a week off at times during the season to freshen him up or help him cope with injuries. But Langer was admant if he returned he would want to play every week. "Wayne (Bennett) might be looking at it that way, but I'm not," said Langer, speaking after playing his first round of the Jack Newton Celebrity Golf Classic at Twin Waters resort. "I've just got to go out and play every game I can as best I can. "I want to go into this wholeheartedly, not halfheartedly." Langer said he didn't think anything had changed since he last played in the national competition in 1999 and expected he'd be heavily targeted as always. "I don't think anything has changed in that way," he said. "The Broncos have got a very good side and I just want to be part of it." Langer resumed training a week ago and will make a decision on a comeback at the end of January. "It's been tough, but pre-seasons are always tough for me," the pint-sized No.7 said. "It's all going to come down to how I'm coping with the travelling and with the training and whether I've still got the passion for the game. "At this stage I'm very keen to play and that is what I want to do." Source: the good guys, nzoom

Former North Queensland skipper Tim Brasher wants his old job back when he returns to the national rugby league fold after a year on the sidelines nursing an injury. The 30-year-old is confident he will be fit to play in 2002 and is eyeing off the Cowboys' captain's job, handed to Paul Bowman when Brasher injured his knee late last year. Bowman is refusing to withdraw from the race, so both will have to wait until the Cowboys announce their 2002 skipper early next year. "It would be good," Brasher said. "But it's not the be-all and end-all. It's up to the coaches to decide who's going to get that job." The fullback is also chasing a spot in the NSW State of Origin side in what he admits will be the twilight of his football career. "I'm planning on two to three (more years of football). That will see me out. I'll definitely say goodnight then," he said. "If I'm playing football, I'm playing to the best that I can so I'll be hoping that I can squeeze my way back in (to the NSW side)." Brasher snapped a knee ligament in October 2000 after jumping off a ladder while cleaning a fan at home and was ruled out for 2001. He admitted his year on the outer was tough, especially since it was the result of a freak accident at home. "I don't ever want to watch for a year again. It's pretty hard when you want to get out there and be a part of it," he said. Brasher is back in training now and looking forward to a trial match against his former side South Sydney, to be held in Mackay in March. "It will be good fun playing against Souths again after being out for two years ... I'm sure they will come out firing," he said. Meanwhile, Bowman is confident an off-season shoulder reconstruction will not stop him playing in the Cowboys' first round match against Brisbane. He said he would not withdraw from the race for the skipper's job but would support whoever was chosen. "It wouldn't affect me too much either way," he said. Source: nzoom
