Brett Finch quits Eels

Adrian Proszenko | April 8, 2009 - 8:55AM

Brett Finch has shocked Parramatta officials by requesting an immediate release from the club to take up a lucrative offer in the English Super League.
Finch made the request late last night and Eels officials are expected to formally announce a release later this morning.
The Eels halfback has been struggling for form this year and the news hasn't come as a surprise to club officials.
The 27-year-old, who was involved in a recent drinking session with Willie Mason, recently bemoaned the lack of characters in the game. However, it's understood he is struggling to cope with the pressure of living in the fishbowl existence of the NRL.
Finch stood immediately stood himself down from Friday night's crucial encounter with St George Illawarra, claiming he was not in a fit mental state to play.
The latest development is a major blow for the Eels, who produced one of the worst displays in recent memory in last weekend's disappointing loss to the Roosters.
The make-up of the Eels halves will now be the next challenge for coach Daniel Anderson. Finch had been struggling to develop a fluent halves pairing with former NSW outside back Jarryd Hayne.

Wow, well that solves a few problems.

Staggers suggestion that Robson was playing this week might actually be the case !

Also, Hadley just confirmed this. Finch vs Anderson situation which has come to a head.

Pete will be devastated......

Be interesting to see who gets the promotion on Friday night to the bench - Kris would be the logical halfback choice.

Wow. Just wow.

I found it strange that both Kinga and Robson weren't named in the wenty side this week, now I know why..

This is good news...

Not because we will necessarily do any better this year, but because it will free up a lot of cash so we can chase someone else.

Interesting times!

could there now be an opening for Tim Smith or Matt Head to come to the club for the rest of the year??

Yahooo FINALLY!!! Look you can't question he's commitment or effort but the bloke just can't play!

Hopefully we can get a good half that will be with us for years to come.

Best news I have had as a Parra supporter.

I think there is far more to this than a personal feud. I think the myth of Finch being great for team attitude and passion will now be exposed.

To be honest I had hoped Anderson would come in to the joint and try to push Finch out and I was pretty disappointed yesterday when he was selected. As Fathead said, we can be confident that DA is taking a very different approach behind the scenes.

He may be able to change the culture in less than the old chestnut of 18 months. Getting rid of Finch was essential. Hopefully it can shock Cayelss into action too.

I think there is a real chance this will release some of the negativity and self-doubt from the younger, more creative players like Mateo, Hayne and Inu. This team needs to be about them - they are our match winners.

It may not happen it overnight, but it will happen.

This my friends, is a very good day.
