Brett Stewart no certainty for round one

THE man in charge of masterminding former Test fullback Brett Stewart's NRL return can not guarantee the Manly star will be back on the field in time for round one next year.
Manly physiotherapist Andre Rickenbach has overseen every aspect of Stewart's arduous recovery from a serious knee injury suffered in this year's opening round loss to Wests Tigers.
Rickenbach said the injury to Stewart's left knee - which occurred as he attempted to tackle giant winger Lote Tuqiri - was more serious than the injury to his right knee which limited the 25-year-old to just five games in 2009.
Asked whether Stewart would be available for Manly's opening clash of 2011 against Melbourne, Rickenbach admitted it was too early to tell despite having already passed the normal nine-month recovery period.
"It's far too early to say he'll be ready for round one," Rickenbach said.
"This (recovery) has taken a little bit longer because there was more damage to the injury, and he had to undergo two operations.
"Last time he had to undergo just one, which is why we're taking things nice and slowly at the moment.
"It's just one of many steps. We're not forecasting anything at this stage.
"It's progressing as planned and it's progressing nicely.
"He's got a few boxes to tick and it's small steps at a time, but we're getting there slowly."
Stewart, who was recently cleared of sexual assault charges which have also clouded the past 24 months, has played just six games in two seasons due to successive knee injuries.
He is some time away from running at full speed, and is currently still restricted to bikework, swimming, cross-training, balance work and gentle running.
"He's using a treadmill out at the (Sydney) Swans which offsets his weight," he added.
"Definitely nothing like (full pace), we don't really have any idea how he's going until after Christmas."
In better news for the Sea Eagles, hardworking backrower Shane Rodney - who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in August - will be able to resume running after the Christmas break after making a full recovery from his reconstruction.
"He's on track as far as the recovery goes for one of those injuries," Rickenbach added.
"Everything's ticking along nicely, but we won't get ahead of ourselves by any means."

Hopefully he can get right for round one, either way, it will be great to see him back...

Round one is still four or so months away, I'm not worried.

As ZJ said, if Stewart isn't fit throw Hoppa Jnr in there.

Hoppa Jnr with a strong off-season will be the perfect replacement untill Snake is fit and ready to go....

I'll probably get flamed some for this, but Stewart will probably be pretty average in terms of form for 2011.
Consecutive season ending injuries will always cut down a huge portion of any players athleticism.

You won't get flamed.

No-one expects him to get back to his pre 2009 form. I just want him to get through injury free.

Agree with MSIH.

Anyone that is expecting Stewart to immediately jump back into his 2008 boots is stupid.

As long as he plays consistently, that's all that matters. Regarding form/possible rep footy, he wouldn't even make the Country side ahead of Dugan anyway.

I think we're in a win-win situation.
Brett Stewart gets back, stays healthy, great.
If not we get to see Hopoate do his thing and develop, also great.

Your right whether he is back in round 1 or round 4 is the main worry. The main worry Manly are concerned about is whether he can overcome this injury and return to full speed. If Stewart loses 1 metre of speed he loses half of his potency.

When he had the op the doc gave him no guarantee he would be able to even play again. They had to rebreak his leg so they could manipulate back into position. No one has returned to Rugby Leage after havign this sort of operation.

A knee recon is a snap compared to what Stewart has to overcome with this injury.

Brett Stewart's speed the big question
Dean Ritchie From: The Daily Telegraph November 25, 2010 12:00AM

BRETT Stewart reckons pure speed is a "gift".

"You either have it, or you don't," Stewart said yesterday.

It will be the most perplexing question throughout 2011 for the returning Stewart. Will he possess the same dazzling pace after two operations on his left knee and two more on his right?

Yesterday at the Pittwater Sports Clinic in Narrabeen, Stewart went through drills on a trampoline designed to control his foot stride and knee and give him running balance.

The Daily Telegraph was there to watch a fit and healthy Stewart train in front of Manly physiotherapist Andre Rickenbach.

While reluctant to talk with the media after being cleared of a sexual assault allegation, Stewart yesterday spoke for the first time about the coming season and desire for speed.

"Speed is a gift - you either have it or you don't," Stewart said. "Time will tell [if I have lost some pace]. But if I work hard enough at my recovery then the speed will gradually come back. Obviously I think about it [injuries to both knees].

"But I have played enough football to know that confidence builds with each game back and I'll be the same.

"Look at Shane Rodney for example - he's been dogged by injuries and has been one of our most consistent players in recent seasons. Confidence is a great healer.

"I've set a goal to be back for round one against Melbourne."

Stewart sustained another knee injury in round one last season against Wests Tigers - and didn't play again.

It is no coincidence the last time Stewart was fit and flying, Manly won the 2008 grand final 40-0.

At that point he also was the NSW and Australian fullback.

Asked for his 2011 goals, Stewart said: "I want to have an influence on the team and do the job expected of me. I just want to play consistently.

"I've taken on a senior role in the last few years. It's great to see the enthusiasm coming through with the young players.

"I've missed training with the boys, but in future I won't spend as much time on the field training as I did early in my career.

"I'll have to manage my on-field time better and have the right medical and training staff at Manly to monitor that for me. I will be guided by them."

Rickenbach said Stewart was like a Porsche that had been "in a prang."

"We will take things slowly and tick all the boxes," he said.

"[Regaining] speed takes time. Remember Brett hasn't run in a year.

"But he is blessed with natural speed. He is very professional and doesn't cut any corners."
