Brian McClennan Quits Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos coach Brian McClennan resigned as the club's Super League coach on Monday after two years in charge.
The 48-year-old New Zealander stepped down after a trophy-less season at Headingley and will be replaced by Brian McDermott.
McClennan had signed a new one-year contract in May but suffered disappointment this year after finishing without any silverware.
The New Zealander said he had decided to leave a year ahead of schedule to allow McDermott to take over as quickly as possible under a long-standing agreement.
"I think the time is right to hand over the reins now rather than later," McClennan said. "I just feel if I continued it would be for selfish reasons only. Brian is ready now and will do a great job.
"I would also like to acknowledge and thank all the wonderful players and staff who have been terrific these past three years. The fans have been great too."
McClennan guided Leeds to consecutive titles in his first two seasons before reaching the final of the Challenge Cup this season where they were beaten by Warrington.

Wow, that's a shock. Not sure what to make of the appointment of McDermott. He didn't do a great job with Harlequins but then I'm not sure any coach would.

Yet another coach to the available coaching pool. Wonder if NRL clubs will be interested. I thought he did a great job with the Kiwis when he was in charge.

Yeah I can see this ^^ happening. He will get the Kiwi's Job automatically and if anyone knows how to let Sharkies and Cowboys boards know ASAP.
Brian McClenan is New Zealands Wayne Bennett (even tho Bennett is tha man)

I think perhaps McClennan could be a coaching director for the Kiwis. SK wont and shouldnt give up the Kiwis coaching role, he has done a greta job with them.

I think Newcastle or Cronulla should chase McClennan they both have young coaches who can be pushed back to Assistant for a few years while Brian is there, and would learn alot from him aswell.

McDermott is a grub. I'd rather not have his influence on my club, especially in a Head Coaching role. Oh well. Leeds will do well as expected and some of the gullible will think this guy can coach.

Bring McClennan back to an assistant role with the NZ Warriors for the time being or as a central figure for any second team bid looking to gain entry in to the NRL. We can not lose McClennan from the game. Apart from being a great coach, he is a great character for the game.

Very harsh calling McDermott a 'grub', what has he done to deserve that?

Barrie McDermott played at my local club the Wyong Roos prior to moving to my beloved Wigan Warriors. I saw him up close and personal and will stand by the label. If you got to watch a fair portion of his career, the label on more than one occasion is rather fitting. A few of his opponents would agree. Barrie crossed the line that is aggressive play and that of a grub more than he or his fans would care to admit.

Outside that, a tough, agrressive, uncompromising player who was one of the best forwards of his time albeit one who's lack of discipline cost him and his various sides on occasion. Left Wigan, had a stellar career with the club he is now coach of and good luck to all involved.

Brian McDermott is the new Leeds coach, not Barrie.

Were you at the GF when The Entrance beat Wyong the year Barrie played ? my brother was coach of The Entrance.

I think you are getting mixed up. Read the coaches name again.

Although I would not agree that Barrie was a grub either, maybe on the field he was a little over the top at times but off it he is an extremely likeable character who has invested a lot back into the game since retiring, in fact he was named as an ambassador for the RFL last year. He's currently working as a pundit for Sky, covering lower league games and occasional Super League matches, and he's been earmarked as someone to possibly take over when Stevo eventually retires.

 LMFAO

Excuse my Sunday morning rant. I just exposed some hidden resentment for Barrie McDermott

Can't agree with you EvilHomer, McDermott on the field was a grub. Likeable yes, a grub all the same no matter how you want to frame it.

Appologies. All the best Brian

I would have been yes.

Who would that have been? Alan Emery or was he at Woy Woy by then?

Yeah Allan, still at The Entrance then.

My appologies, Allan not Alan. Those were the days when Central Coast Rugby League thrived. I loved those battles. Allan got the better of old Rip more often than he would have liked. Mad Monday's were a tough gig when Rip lost a Grand Final to Allan  You didn't want to get in to a "wrestle" which would ensure by about Tuesday morning!

Nice, I know his son pretty well too ;-) Small world.
