BRIAN SMITH MEDIA CONFERENCE - ROUND 2
21/03/04
Q - BRIAN THAT MUST HAVE BEEN SATISFYING?
A - Yes it sure was.

Q - WHAT WAS THE BEST BIT OF IT?
A - The scoreline - we won!

Q - IT WAS A DIFFICULT GAME - A FEW MISTAKES AND A HIGH PENALTY COUNT AGAINST YOU?
A - Yes, it was good to win with all of that

Q - WHAT CAN YOU TAKE FROM A WIN LIKE THAT?
A - For us at the moment, 2 points is what we got. That will do us.

Q - GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF LAST WEEK DOES IT ADD TO THE SATISFACTION?
A - I can't remeber last week, I can only remember today.

Q - A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL BE SCRATCHING THEIR HEADS AFTER THIS TURNAROUND, WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THEM?
A - I don't know, I don;t have an answer to that.

Q - WAS IT JUST THE FIRST HALF LAST WEEK THAT YOU WERE UNHAPPY WITH?
A - We certainly improved last week in the second half but you certainly can't do what we did in the first half and expect things to go your way.

Q - YOU COMEPTED THE WHOLE GAME - FOR INSTANCE THE KICK CHASE WAS GREAT?
A - Yes, we competed very well. In the end that's what got us the two points.

Q -WERE YOU PERSONALLY FEELING THE PRESSURE?
A - Yes, I always feel it.

Q - WAS THE WEEK A DIFFICULT ONE FOR YOU BRIAN?
A - It was a tough week, yes.

Q - LUKE O'DWYER MADE A GOOD DEBUT?
A - He is a player that boy. To come in and do what he did..to come from the Queensland Cup..it has become pretty obvious that that competition is serving one of the purposes of promoting good young players, there are quite a number of them across the board, he is just another one. I am rapt for him - he is a dedicated young man who works really hard and has fitted in perfectly in our place and I have really enjoyed being his coach

Q - DID YOU THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN FURTHER IN FRONT AT HALF TIME BRIAN?
A - Yes, there were some mysterious things happen out there today. I thought the planets were all lining up for a while - I'm not sure which planet some people were from out there today. That all just added to the drama, and just added to the amount of character that the boys had to show - the way they prepared this week, they put everything aside and they did it great - it just kept getting worse and worse during the game but they just didn't let it interfere with the target of the day, which was tog et a win.

Q - HAVE YOU HEARD ANYTHING FROM JAMIE LATELY?
A - Yes, I had a text message from him last night wishing the boys all the best and one of our staff got one straight afte rthe game saying how he was going to sing the team song and how he wanted to congratulate the team.

Q - WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU BRIAN?
A - I don't know and I don't want to read too much into it. I know what I would like to read into it. We all would. Jamie has some things that need to get sorted. Hopefully all the people that are frustrated fairy tale writers and gossip mongerers that have had their last this weekcan have a look in the mirror and ask themselves are they printing something that actually know or are they printing something that someone else has fed them, and are they making fools of themselves in doing so. From our point of view what is a bit sad is that it is alla dding pressure to Jamie - and we don't want that - we just want him to take his time and sort himself out. We are selfish - we want him back playing footy - but ultimately we want him to make the best decsion for himself - which must be tough at the moment.

I especially liked this part...

It's always exciting to see a good young kid with potential coming through. You never know, he might crack it for a spot in the starting line-up this week.

He speaks well but does he deserve the credit for the win?

Is he asking for the credit for the win? - NO

Is he being given all the credit for the win? - NO

God you people judge him every fricken chance you are given - and even when u are not presented with the chance to judge....In my book its pretty damn appauling from supporters to be grasping at any faint opportunity to say a derogatory comment about the coach....we won the frickin game - no its NOT all credit to the coach, no one is asking for it it be that way.

The coach is always the spokesperson for the team after a game - HE speaks at the media conference - thats why his words are published.....the captain or one other prominant player also usually have something to say.

Spot on Alex. If you are going to blame the coach for a loss, you have to credit him for a win.

Well he sure as hell gets credit for the loses and anything else negative that happens in the club.

I think you've proven that you can't make an unbiased comment in regards to Smith. We will all just sit back and wait again for another thread to be made "SACK SMITH" whenever we next lose, wether it be next week or in afew months from now.

Everyone did well yestersay to get a tough win, considering we dropped way too much ball, gave away way too many penalties, and had a tough week to build up to the game.

Credit to Smithy and all the boys who played.

Agreed - it's hard to tell the who the Parra supporters are sometimes. Surely the coach has to get some credit considering you frustrated coaches out there give it to him when we lose. Brian Smith must have the thickest skin to still get the team up after such a terrible week - not tomention the fantastic turn-around last year despite the worst injuries for years.

You can tell he really admires the players the way he expresses himself and that could only be a positive for the team.

Smithy deserves plenty of credit for the turn around as do the players. They all pulled together to make it happen.
Also well done Smithy for a great press conference
I'm not sure which planet some people were from out there today
I love it. Not hard to figure out who that quote is aimed.
With his selection of O'dwyer he proved that he will put players in if he thinks they can help the team win. So much for the not giving youngsters a go theory.

If every Club had someone with as much integrity as Brian Smith and Denis Fitzgerald, there would not be as much trouble in the NRL with off field behaviour as there is going on at present.
400 first grade games, and Fitzy 25 years as CEO... you don't last that long if you can't cut the mustard.
Fitzy is Parra through and through. Was when he played, still is today.
Who is the next longest serving CEO in the NRL.. Perhaps Shane Richardson with about ten years.?

PARRA FOR SURE IN 2004
(Smith 9 wins from his last 12 NRL games, Bennett, 3 from his last 12.. Parra 4 wins and one winning half in 2004 from 5 starts (3 trials 2NRL) the facts speak for themselves....It's gonna get better)

THE CREDIT IS NOT TO SMITHY, NOR THE PLAYERS :p

Like Brian said (those that paid attention ](*,) ) the planets were lining up, we had extra terrestial help and support which even he is unaware of. Sully and Mulder are back to find out the truth. Its out there....... :alcho:

of course when we lose its all Brians fault :D

now c'mon Smith has come up with some better ones or at very least equal to those

"Handbags at 5 paces"
"A draw is like seeing your mother in law drive off the cliff in your new car....mixed feelings"

and there was anotherone at the start of the year that escapes me right now

hell yes he deserevs some credit!!

He out coached Bennett.

With less than 5 to go, Bennett still had three interchanges left, and on a stinking hot day, that was bewildering!

Smith, got his fresh men on before bennett all day, allowing them to be warmed up and ready to rock, when the bronco sub forwards came on. And Stapelton and Peek completly outplayed Parker and the rest of the bronco bench.

He also resisted the temptation to put Webster on too early. Leaving him for the last 15 moinutes in a tight game on a hot day, you saw how he ran the tiring broncos raggered!

He also chose flew Armit up to replace Pearson, but considering the heat and the limited number of matches Armitt has played in the last 12 months, he chose to run with the risk of playing a debutant in O'Dwyer, and most would agree he did a great job!

And clearly he did the right things during the week to improve our defence, adn to keep the lads minds on the job.

Bag him, if he does something dumb, just like anyone else, but wrap him when he does a good job.

Well done Smithy and Team.

I'll think you'll find that was due to the injuries they had suffered. He only had two players left on the bench however it would have made life a little easier for his players if he swapped a few boys off the bench. Losing Barry Berrigan was there biggest problem.

However, that being said Smith and the players did a great job and deserve big wraps for the commitment the showed after the week before.

True, and considering Tony scored two of their tries, when they lost him they were really in big trouble. Still, we lost Hopkins before the Broncos had any injuries, so I guess in the end no real excuses out of that one.
