Brian Wilson's "Smile"

If you don't know the story I'll try to be brief.

Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys , famous for being a recluse and a bit of a weirdo who once admitted he is scared of the beach.
He wrote or co wrote most of their big hits.

Anyway in 1966 he started to make an album called "Smile" , the people who heard the unfinished work claimed it to be his opus if you like.

It was around the same era as Pet Sounds . The Beatles were said to be influenced from pet sounds when they made Sgt Peppers.

Anyway he never finished it and it became a bit of a legend in music circles.....until now.

He recently finished it and did some shows to launch it.
Which in itself is a miracle for a bloke who probably should of died or at best been committed to the nuthouse.

I got the record yesterday and on first listen it sounds like the Beach Boys , 2nd listen it sounds like a whole multitude of little beautiful songs blended and melded together to create a weird and wonderful ride.

If you like the Beach Boys you'll like this , it does sound a bit dated in the lyric side of things but who cares .

It is amazing , I can't wait to listen to it through headphones when I have nothing else to do but stare into space.

They don't make music like this any more , record companies wouldn't allow it to start with..
I don't think there are people who can hear songs like this in their heads to start with.

SMiLE is sensational. The 'Greatest Album Never Released' gets released and is stunning.

Great sales around the world.

Brian Wilson wins a Grammy for best intrumental from the album - Ms O'Learys Cow. The famous but dark FIRE music. Locked away in the capital record vaults for 30 years for fear of it actually starting fires. Brian on too much LSD and coke? Yep. But a great track nonetheless.

SMiLE was named the Top Album of 2004 by Entertainment Weekly.
Placed as one of the year's best at Rolling Stone.
And best album and live event at England's XFM.

In the UK Metro, Brian won Comeback of the Year, saying that Brian "proved that SMiLE was the masterpiece everyone has always hoped it was."

Brian also gets awarded the MusiCares Person Of The Year.

In addition, SMiLE was named Top Scoring Album of 2004 by Metacritic, with an astounding score of 96. Metacritic compiled critics' ratings from around the world, resulting in SMiLE becoming the highest-rated album of the year.

What a fantastic year for Brian.

SMiLE. Its mind blowingly mind blowing. And live its even better!

I think you mean Wilson  -huge gap- McCartney

Brian Wilson is such a better song writer than McCartney.
