There is so much happening behind the scenes for the Brisbane Bombers NRL Expansion Bid.

Bid Director Nicholas Livermore met with the NRL on Thursday in relation to a number of go-forward objectives including a focus on junior rugby league programs throughout the South-East and providing funding to grass-roots programs and the Men of League / FOGS partnerships.

In addition, the proposed home-base within the ownership of the Brisbane Racing Club precinct will continue developments over the coming weeks,

Stay tuned on all happenings on Facebook and the revamped website will get launched just after Easter.

This bid is idiotic. For starters any new brisbane team would HAVE to be South Brisbane, the South brisbane soldiers or whatever, anyone who knew the city would see this. You have brisbane broncos close to the cbd, north of the river, very much locking the heart of "brisbane" down, but then you have this bulk of the population south of the river spreading down for miles and miles, who kind of feel like outcasts and have a certain pride in south brisbane specifically, extremely culturally diverse and not primm and proper or country and western like the vibe of the broncs. Grimey and urban, rough nuts that love league but aren't really feeling the broncos. Most go for the cowboys specifically because JT is a SOUTH brisbane lad. Talk to them and thats precisely what they say, you've also got a huge pacific island contingent and then you have logan, my god logan. South brisbane is probably the rugby leaguiest place on earth, everyone is a custom made league fan and proud of living in SOUTH brisbane, or south of brisbane. Ipswich fans will jump on board for sure... Its just a no brainer. "Brisbane bombers" appeals to absolutely no one.

For a new team, the bigger the locale name, the better for future growth of members and general fanbase.

PNG >> Port Moresby
Central Coast >> Gosford
West Coast/WA >> Perth
Central Queensland >> Rockhampton
New Zealand >> Christchurch or Wellington
Queensland >> South Queensland >> Brisbane >> Ipswich etc
It would definitely be a huge mistake to call a png team port moresby, png people not from port moresby hate it (including those living there). They have their rivalries and people from lae or the southern highlands or wherever don't want to cheer for one of their rivals, they'd sooner stick with the broncos or panthers or whoever they support. The team would have to be "new guinea".

I'll put a scan up of the article tonight but they are very much saying west/sw Brisbane is where the bulk of broncos support it, SE is titans and they will have their grass root link ups and focus on north and NE Brisbane up to the Sunshine Coast. Anyone from Brisbane comment on that?

I can comment on that - nonsense.
Broncos are cbd and inner north/inner north west/inner west. Ofcourse a lot of south brisbane support them, they're like I said custom made league fans and they have limited options but if you put a South brisbane team in the comp forget it, they will jump on it so fast. South brisbane is like western sydney. There's a certain special pride people have in south brisbane stemming from the fact a lot of it is a shithole (funny how people work but it is what it is).
Its just really really obvious if you have a feel for brisbane. South brisbane is the heartland of rugby league and the fans are proud of their southern status. The area is screaming out for a team, could probably support two, south brisbane and logan.

So the bombers have no problems saying that the broncos region extends to a rival bid in Ipswich's turf lol. No wonder this bid is a piece of shit, they don't even know the geographical important areas of their region so they make it up as they go along.

They have all the hallmarks of becoming a souless plastic entity. Australian sport has enough of those. They're in the same basket as GWS.

For people in Brisbane that don't support the Broncos that's how they tend to view the Broncos - this corporation that killed off their heritage. Replicating that model again with the Bombers won't engage those non-Broncos supporters.

What Brisbane needs is a club that is anti-Broncos in its approach. A club that has developed organically out of local heritage and not one that's been concocted in the minds of marketing gurus. By all means they need to have a strong financial model but just as important they need to pay due respect to the original queensland clubs. That's how you get the non-Broncos fans on side.

Furthermore the Bombers are targeting the wrong areas. They're focused on the City, North side and the Sunshine Coast. The real growth and core of the population is in the south and west. They need to play out of Lang Park and they need to draw out non-Broncos supporters from across the entire city but setting up in the South-West fill allow them to rival the Broncos in size.

And this is a comment about Ipswich in part but a 2nd Brisbane club shouldn't be a little brother to the Broncos. We don't want a tiny suburban club. They need to appeal to every non-Broncos supporter across the entire city and surrounds to put them on an even keel with the Broncos.

That's how rugby league will create a real and viable crosstown rivalry.

Like I said don't expand into Brisbane unless it's the right club with the right model.

Out of interest did the the SQ Crushers have a "different" feel about them? I am not too sure how you get this grass roots feel about a club short of it being a traditional Brisbane club that becomes the bid. The bombers have talked about linking up with grass roots clubs and jnr development. Does the bid need to be run by club people people rather than business men? Then how does it be sustainable given the majority of money will come from corporate support rather than fanbase? If the Bombers can get 20k+ crowds and has the backing of some serious wealth then they tick the boxes for me. The Western Corridor will be there for the future when they can justify their own stadium and create an identity that encompasses that region of Brisbane. I think to be succesful I do agree that any new club is going to have to draw support from the entire region not just a section of the city. A "plastic" bid has more chance of doing this than a bid based around one or two Q'land cup clubs representing a small geographical area. The litmus test for the Bombers will be if and when they launch their fan engagement strategy later this year and if they can show people are behind them. Any new club is going to be the smaller brother of the Broncos, they are the biggest RL club in the world, it is hardly likely that anyone coming in is going to match them anytime soon. Being sustainable and building a decent fanbase is the main priority for the first few years of any new Brisbane club. Challenging the Broncos will be a very long way off and likely never, doesn;t mean they can't become one of the top clubs in the NRL.

Well said docbrown (wherever you posted it), what do you think of a "south brisbane" club? And I agree they should have a rebellious anti establishment vibe to counter the clean cut corporate broncs and appeal to the rough southsiders. The nrl's oakland raiders.
