Not sure how keen the NRL are or would be on expanding to 20 teams over the next decade or so but it looks like all 3 bids would be welcome additions both on and on the pitch especially geographically with the firehawks shoring up the city(Brisbane), the dolphins the northern suburbs and moreton bay region and the jets the south and western corridor regions.

The only negative you’d get from rewarding 3 new Queensland franchises would be that it would leave only 1 other franchise available for either Perth, NZ2 or Adelaide etc.

Long term (say, by 2050), there'd be merit in having Redcliffe playing up north, the Broncos in the city, the Jets at Ipswich and the Titans at the Gold Coast. That would be a good spread for SEQ and would close the shop in the region at NRL level pretty much forever but you wouldn't need all three bids.

The director of the Brisbane Jets bid has lifted the lid on the details behind the expansion of the NRL in South West Queensland as well as the potential merger between the Jets and Firehawks, saying that the ball is in the Firehawks’ court after a 50/50 partnership proposal.

The director of the Jets’ expansion bid Nicholas Livermore, joined SEN Afternoons to provide an update of the extension in South Queensland.
We presented to the ARL commission last week,” Livermore said.

“We believe the Brisbane Jets is the best direction for the game here in Southeast Queensland.

“Focusing West of Brisbane through the huge growth market of Ipswich and Toowoomba.
It’s been well publicised that the Commission is concerned about finances and making sure that if a new team does come in that they don’t have to bail them out in five years.

“We had put forward a case which met the minimum guarantee of $10 million, but the Commission were concerned that we were the least financially backed out of all the three bids.”

Didn't PVL tell the ARLC to bail the Sharks out of debt a few years ago?

That means the business case for the Sharks doesn't add up, so why the double standard?

If PVL is fair dinkum about the business side of things needing to stack up, he'll give the licence of the financially unviable Sharks to Brisbane 2 so that the 17th and 18th licences can go to NZ2 and Perth.

Tbf I think if you asked all current 16 clubs to put $10mil cash on the table a lot of them wouldnt be able to Despite receiving well over $100mill from the nrl since it went independent.

If the Jets don't end up part of Brisbane 2 in one way or another, let's hope they don't play spoiler in their region and we end up with North Sydney 2. That will play right into the AFL's hands.

Playing the AFL card, must be getting desperate!

Where would rugby league be if it wasn't for Parramatta's introduction into the New South Wales competition in '47 or Penrith's in '67?

The NRL could be contemplating the same thing in 20 years' time if they follow the path of expansion in Brisbane's western region, a golden patch of rugby league heartland where the AFL is rapidly establishing a foothold.
That's according to Nick Livermore, director of the Brisbane Jets - one of three outfits bidding for the NRL's 17th license - which has its roots set in the rapidly-growing Ipswich and Western Corridor regions.

An amalgamation of the Brisbane Bombers and Western Corridor bids, which were first established when Queensland expansion talks were first sparked a decade ago, the Jets have a blueprint for growth that Livermore believes is most equipped to safeguard the NRL from losing monumental reach to rival codes in the sunshine state.

While they don't boast the cash reserves of bid rivals the Brisbane Firehawks and Redcliffe Dolphins, the Jets might have something money can't buy, at least not yet.
For the first time ever, this year the Brisbane Lions surpassed the Broncos in membership volume.

That, Livermore believes, is alarming.

"They're out breaking the Broncos in crowds, they're out breaking them in membership, they've got a stronger development program," he said.

"This is not critical of the Broncos, this is just where AFL's going."

While the Lions' on-field success has played a part, the code's expansion in the Queensland market has seen interest skyrocket, and their investment at the grassroots level is a worrying prospect for the NRL.

Brisbane's west, considered among Australia's fastest-growing population areas, has been identified as a key target zone for the AFL, where local level participation rates, particularly amongst females, have boomed over the past five years.

Meanwhile, the Lions will soon call the Ipswich suburb of Springfield home, with the construction of a $70 million high-performance training facility that will their AFL and AFLW team expected for completion in early 2022.

With Queensland quickly becoming the battleground in the code war, it's clear where the AFL sees their future in the state.

"The data shows that's where the market's going to be, that's where the AFL's going," Livermore claimed.

"As a national game, they're trying to make significant inroads into the southeast corner. They've picked the largest growth market and their strategic report shows what they're doing.

"This is why the Bombers, when we had our bid for nine and a half years competing against the Western Corridor bid, which was focused on Ipswich and West, we came together because we both knew what the benefit of the game was and that's to grow it west.

"Rugby league has an opportunity to ensure they're still number one...if we don't do this, where are we going to be in 20 years' time?"

You've got to love the double standards of the QRL and RL administration from Ipswich. The Lions @ Springwood Social Club was created around a decade ago and invests some of the money they make from pokies in the Springwood Pumas AwFuL club. You never see these selfish pricks mention this. Whenever I tried to get the QRL to bring back the Scorpions at Queensland Cup level and put them at Cronulla Park to bolster RL in Logan I was met with silence. They truly don't give a f**k about Logan.

That's because the State member for Springwood, Mick De Brenni is close friends with the President of the Springwood Pumas AFL club and also de Brenni's son played at the Springwood Pumas. Logan is a pure RL area and without the favours, AFL would be nowhere.

The AFL scare mongering is silly though, it's such a stupid Rugby League mentality as well.

You could have 12 NRL teams in Brisbane and AFL would still find a niche, it will still pump money into grassroots and kids will still play it.

But the dumbest thing about it is that if AFL is such a huge threat to these areas that aren't represented by NRL clubs then wouldn't the areas in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne not directly represented by AFL teams be vulnerable? Why isn't Rugby League storming into Joondalup or Dandenong?? these places aren't covered by AFL teams, they are there for the taking!

Be interesting to model if spending $13mill on grassroots in Brisbane would fight off the AFL more so than adding another top tier club? of course that wont generate revenue so its pure expense but if the argument is we are doing this to fight off AFL then there might be better ways of spending $13mill a year?

@Get Rid of The Donkeys Member of the QLD Parliament and former NRL referee Tim Mander has last night called out Mick de Brenni and the President of the Springwood Football club for corruption. The two grew up together... good to finally see this stuff come to light. The Pumas favours might be about to dry up.

Exactly, when you have thousands of southerners moving to Qld of course AFL will become more popular over time. AFL is part of their culture they love it with a passion. We don't have the same migration the other way. All this scaremongering has been going on for years. It use to be that soccer would take over.

Joondalup Giants won the Grand Final last season. Now 31yrs old and, until last weekend, the reigning NRLWA Premiers, and we still play out of a suburban park with no fences and a community hall as clubrooms. A meeting with the local shire last season to see what we could do to improve our 'home' situation was met with "There's nothing we will do for you for at least 10 years", so despite the huge (for WA League measures) junior numbers, the fact that numerous NRL players came from our club (+ 1 'X-Factor' near winner!), and some success on the field, none of that mattered to the 'unless you're aussie rules or the arts' Joondalup council.

But yep, League can boom in Joondalup with enough NRL funding, and I hope to see the Giants as the NRL's 18th team in the near future! We'll just need the Broncos to change their colour scheme first..! :p

...(I understand the point you were making by the way).

I don't know much about Perth but sounds like a great place to base an NRL club. It's not near Burswood (WC eagles) or Fremantle.
